I Have a Bad Coil Pack

For awhile, my car has been on a downward spiral, minor things started showing up which could be minor clues to a bigger problem.

Over the last several months this has what gotten worse....
-Random stutter at idle
-Extra sensitivity to gas (I couldn't use certain stations anymore)
-Heavy misfires under heavy loads (High gears or heavy throttle, A/C on makes it worse too, especially during the hot part of the days or when the car has been on for awhile).

What I KNEW was good on my car...

-Fuel Filter
-Spark Plugs
-Injectors
-CKPS (Ref+Pos) Sensors are good/been replaced
-Cam Pos Sensor (Not checked see below)

The smell of unburnt fuel burning up in my exhaust was really the last straw I either had...
A leaking injector or something ignition related to cause all of the fuel to not be burned up in the cylinders... I went through this problem when I was having CKPS POS sensor issues, un-burnt fuel getting burnt up in the exhaust (LOUD pops and the reeking smell of unburnt gas), so I figured it was something ignition related.

Another wierd thing is... in the morning or at night with cool weather and no A/C on the car ran like a champ

Since the coils were replaced about 60k miles ago (with used ones out of a 97 if I recall correctly), I think I'd give em a shot....

Brought some coils, threw some of them in the random places I had misfires (There was one cylinder where the coil pack was coming apart, I think that was the bad one, never checked it via ohm meter), ran the car during lunch under the usual conditions (A/C on, raping the accelerator pedal), and noooo misfires

/cool story.

I had that same problem last year. Going down the interstate and a LOUD ****ing popping sound. Never knew what it was. Right now Ive got a P1320 code, says to replace all 6 coils. Ive got two known working coils that Im going to test on each cylinder to try and find the bad coil by the process of elimination

Well at least you guys have greater ideas. Some days i sound like a subbi, and before can open the hood to find the culprit, it smooths out. I cannot replace all 6 at once either.

Could be something fouling the plugs when the car sits for awhile then when you start it up can't ignite it until things heat up in there awhile to burn it off then by the time you scuffle to the hood things are hunky dory?

lol@hunky dory. Your explanation makes sense, but I have no clue what it could be. Imma try some different coils from other year than my perfect 99 and see what happens.

pretty sure there not ive got a few sets of each laying around but they are the same size front and rear just the rears have the connect upwards which makes them impossible or barely possible to use on the OEM USIM unless rigged somehow

the front coils are identical with the EXCEPTION that if you wanna use 95-99 coils on the OEM 00-01 Front Valve cover you have to drill out a larger hole or use a 10mm tap the bolts for the 95-99 are 8mm bolts as where 00-01 are 10mm

ok, ill say this, ask essential, i remember him saying he's used 4th and 5th gen rear coilpacks on his I30...teh 4th gen rear are shorter (connection part for the clip) than the 5th gen, but over all, it will work. as far as the front i'm 99% sure theyll all work...they do use the 10mm bolt

right thats what i meant to get a across they will work...but they may require rigging depending... i tried to use 01 coils on my rears about 2 yrs ago pre 00vi and i couldnt get them to fit...i forget which cylinder though.

i believe it was a 97... doesnt matter though. all 4th gens are the same i tested them in my 99 and i know the pull car wasnt 99. 5th gen differences have be noted above. they all do the same thing though, its just a matter of mounting.

Because with Nissan's infinite wisdom they knew there would be a super high demand for 99's only, because they are superior to every other year of 4th gen out there, so they handicapped it with side impact air bags, bad coil packs, and NATs so it can be fair game for other 4th gens.....

i went through the same thing last week. before you guys spend money replacing the coils, ohm them out per fsm, real easy to do, and save a lot of money. mine tested out ok, but i still had a missfire. its the boots that were going bad, they might look ok, but with time they become brittle and mess things up. autozone has a complete boot kit for 53.99. changed the boots out, motor is smooth as can be now

QFTMFT!!!

probably did skimp on the manufacturing of 99's knowing they were gonna dump them next year. IE SE-L's (no offense Aaron, ive still got the same kinda coils) were a last ditch effort to get rid of a few car/suv models...

oh, and jarrod found the solution to side air bags, ive done it and its been off for 5 days now. any other time its only lasted a day or a couple hours.

and NATS, theres just nothing nice about fuel pump killer, reprogramming and $100 keys! lol

we should track down the designer... *recalls .gif of dude getting thrown in pool only to land on edge* just sayen...

oh, and dont forget, rewired ecu and lack of rev limiter increase capabilities!

I have had the same problem and it is driving me nuts. i get p1320 and p0301 codes. I have read the posts and replaced plugs with oem ngk platinum, all 6 coil packs, injectors on cylinders 1 and 2 mass air flow sensor used, intake temp sensor used, both crankshaft position sensors knock sensor cleaned intake and iac. checked for seal on intake manifold. i bought 2 new o2 sensors, have yet to put them on.

this problem started the same day my radiator cracked, kinda weird that it was the same day. i did not let it get too hot. i checked compression in all cylinders and it is ok. initially the car was chugging and smoking badly, white smoke with fuel smell. after all of the work, the smoke and fuel smell are gone, but the chugging remains.

any ideas?

99 infiniti 130 140k never had a problem before.
