Good Idea to drop oil pan and make sure screen is clean?
its a 99 bought with 228k miles and i changed the motor oil to full synthetic mobil 1 high milege day i bought it and a month later added 3/4 of a court of ATF to oil to clean it up. tommorow im doing oil change and was wondering since its such a small oil pan would it be smart to pull down pan and make sure no gunk is in the oil pickup screen?
ATF in the oil before an oil change acts as a flushing agent. An old trick of the trade. I would hate to see your faces when I told you that guys with older diesels run an atf/oil mixture in their engine, all the time. Why not drop the pan if you have the time? Cant hurt. I would. But I dont think trying to clean up the engine on a car that old was a good idea to begin with. The atf will loosen up deposits that are actually keeping some seals from leaking.

yup, at that mileage your taking a chance on causing seals to soften up and start leaking. "if it aint broke, don't fix it"
yup, chances are the crap is preventing the oil from leaking and once it comes off it starts oozing. and all that junk circulating is bound to block something up. thats why i posted auto rx. it actually dissolves build up and sludge and conditiones the seals.
but at his mileage i would'nt run that stuff. god only knows what'll break loose and jam up. just change the oil and add bg moa oil treatment, i've been doing it for years and it helps to keep the viscosity of the oil stable so it protects the block better against high heat and wear down.
i ended up not doing it i will next oil change. the oil was pretty dark this change, had 3800 miles on oil but u can tell it cleaned some stuff up.
and yes its a old trick from the old school putting ATF in motor oil the last 500-1000 miles of your oil change 1 quart to 4 quarts oil will clean up the motor. ATF has WAY more cleaning agents then motor oil. Google it.

Two things.
Rather than using the ATF (usually, high detergent), why not use Sea-Foam to clean the engine? That's what it's designed for.
Dropping the oil pan on the Maxima is surprisingly easy. When I changed my leaking waterpump on my 96 several years ago, I was concerned that some Anti-Freeze had dripped into the oil (rightfully so it turned out). I dropped the bolts on the oil pan and it comes right off. Just use some black RTV sealant to reseal when putting it on. It's literally that simple. Just torque the bolts a little at a time as you go around, don't over tighten them.
By the way, antifreeze in the oil is a BAD thing. It will freeze up bearings rather quickly. I learned that many years ago from an old mechanic when I worked in a Ford garage back in '69.

I ran a quart in my mobil 1 for about a month and 900 miles changed it and here i am 120 miles later with new oil no leaks. Yours was probably on its way out in the first place. the ATF just sped it up.
Once a year I just throw CD2 oil detergent in there during an oil change. It's made specifically to clean particles in the engine without eating away those sealants. It sure has kept my VQ running smooth.
