Recently I've notice that when I turn the A/C on, the display would light up as if the fan is running at full blast, but no air is coming out, it would sometimes start if I hit a bump, other times it would work fine. I did some research and it seems like I need to change the amplifier, am I on the right track? My car is 97 with auto climate control.

 

It is more likely that the blower motor is bad. The amplifier is electronics, transistors and things. When electronics go bad, a bump won't make them work. But it is common for a motor that has brushes wearing out to work when you hit it.

 

Does it work on different fan speeds?

 

Does not work on any speed, not even the highest setting.

 

I agree with Dennis, it's probably the motor and not the amplifier.

 

any time my hitting the dash makes it work, its been the motor.

 

a few days ago it didn't come on, so I was hitting the dash by the glove box area and it never came on. It seems to malfuction when it's really hot outside too, could outside temperature have anything to do with this.

Also, can I service this moter myself or am I better off getting a replacement?

 

+1 on the motor... BUT.... I was hitting mine for a while to get it working when it would stop... But then one day it just died completely, and I found the fan control amp was toast. Drop the blower motor and feed 12V directly to it to see if it works.. If it does, but then does not work when re-connected, you may have a toasted fan amp, which is like $180 from a dealer. A failing motor can overdraw current through the fan amp, which then blows a "protective" fuse inside it (so it doesn't melt or catch fire).

 

Sounds like a crappy situation. Actually, it sounds just like what I use to experience in car audio where failing/fried speaker would kill the amplifier. That's an expensive lesson...
