too much tranny fluid ? what will happen?

I have the 97 Maxima SE auto.
I recently change the tranny fluid to the car, My friend putted 5 qts back in after we drain the fluid out.
I found that may be too much fluid we filled back in.. I check the fluid level when the car is cool, it's even higher than high/hot marking.
I think we should just put 4 qts in..
now what will happen to the car? any idea?

Thanks

too much fluid is just as bad as not enough. Drain until you have the proper fluid level. You should put back in the SAME amount you drained. Did you not measure?

Its hard to get a good reading though. I drained more than I wanted putting in a cooler and put in a lot less than was drained and it says its high. Tested multiple times using hot and cold. Just like the oil dipstick, a good reading is hard to get

just a rule of thumb;
check the fliud with the trans warm and the engine running in park.

the torque converter drains while its not runing cause the level to go up

the fluid also thins out when its warm

just overflow thru dipstick. Check level...while car is running.

If's high enough, it can froth. This will cause it to lose its hydraulic properties and result in clutches and bands slipping. Also foamy ATF will not protect your bearing surfaces from contacting the metal surfaces.

+1

Checking it warm is the best way to read the ATF level.

What some of you don't know is when checking the cold markings on the dipstick you still need the engine running but on a cold start. If the engine is cold and turned off the ATF will be far above the cold markings.

EDIT:

Whether you're reading the COLD or HOT markings on the dipstick the engine needs to be running.

id suggest running the car thru each gear with tires off the ground engine running after filling up. go thru all the gears slowly and let each gear run for 30-45 seconds to make sure fluid's gone thru all the clutch packs..idk, might help.
