High RPM's at higher gears

What can I do or what it is the reason on why my RPM's are so high in like the 3rd 4th and 5th gear they're about 600-700 over what a automatic is and I have a 5 speed should they be lower ? why is that ?

im not an expert but i think overdrive might have something to do with it, plus just the gear ratios.

your correct.. me and nismo2020 were discussing this looking at videos the otehr night. my 97 se auto revs lower at high speeds in 4th/OD than a stock 97 se 5 speed at high speeds in 5th

I was thinking that since we have 1 less gear the gear ratio, like maxej said , is so different. They have to be different obviously , but the auto should go the same speed as a 5-speed with 1 less gear.

so the gear raitos need to be different. example a 5-speed changes to 2nd before and auto changes to 2nd

Nissan didn't make the overall gear ratios the same with the auto and the 5speed, it doesn't matter how many gears you have, the cars have totally different personalities. The gear ratios were made shorter in the 5 speed so the car would lean more towards performance, while the auto was designed a little more for economy. This is why a stock 5 speed will spank a stock auto, but on the highway the auto is slightly more efficient.

These might have been posted before, but I can't remember, so here they are:

4th Gen Auto
1st Gear = 2.79
2nd Gear = 1.51
3rd Gear = 1.00
4th Gear = .69
Final Drive Ratio = 3.62

4th Gen 5 Speed
1st Gear = 3.29
2nd Gear = 1.85
3rd Gear = 1.27
4th Gear = .95
5th Gear = .80
Final Drive Ratio = 3.82

Both sets of numbers came from different issues of Car and Driver.

Yeah, until I just looked at the numbers side by side I didn't know they were THAT different either. Kinda makes you wish they built more 5 speeds.
