Starter

How hard is it to swap out starters.. It's just about that time with mines. Very annoying grinding noise upon start up's. I've priced checked a few like
$228.51 $75.00(Core) BOSCH - Rmfg. Starter, ALL Mdls.

$112.77 $90.00(Core) AIM - Rmfg. Starter, ALL 3.0L V6 Mdls. (1.4KW)

What do you guys think?

Thanks,

Nelson

If you can turn a wrench, it's a piece of cake. Search for "starter" you will find all sorts of how-to's, etc.

Make sure that when you shop for starters, you get the newer, upgraded 10-tooth version. Not the old 8-tooth. The motor was upgraded after '96 due to premature failures, but many auto parts-places still sell the older 8-tooth version.

If I remember correctly it's pretty freakin hard. I might be thinking of the altenator though. Try a search it seems like for one or the other you might have to remove the radiator or something else. I'm just not sure.

Yeah, you could be referring to the alternator. The starter motor only requires that some of the intake plumbing be removed to gain access. Other than that, it's right on top of the bell housing - easy access. It shouldn't take more than 30-40 mins. start2finish.

Just one day should be good enough.

It's a simple job, just make sure you have all the tools ready before you get started.

The bolts might be on pretty tight though.

Start spraying some rust eater on the day before. It should loosen them up a little for you.

No snow to rust up the ride or the salt they lay down for the ice. So they are rust free.

If you have a CAI or pop and removed the stock intake hardware, you should have enough room to get the job done without much hassle. The rear bolt is pretty tough though...

Maybe I haven't looked enough around here. But i'm not able to find a 10tooth version starter? Must have been a new guy working at NOPI, But he didn't know squat about cars. I thought you had to know at least the basics when working there, Oh wells, Where did you guys get yours from?

recent starter break down

The starter in my 95 max just went out on me, I went to Nissan and they wanted $350.00 to put a new one in (labor included). A local part store want $169.00 plus a $65.00 core.I decided to go to a local starter shop, I pulled it over ther at 8:00 in the morning and they had it done and back to be by 1:00 that afternoon for $80.00, my advice look up your local listing for a starter rebbuild shop. Give it a shot.

thanks Mike

I just did mine 5 days ago

You will def need a 17mm deep socket with 6" extention and a huge-a$$ breaker bar for the back bolt!! I used a 4ft long 2" round steel pipe to break the bolt free(oh and you will have to remove your upper intake tubing to make this work easier)Its almost welded on there from the factory. after i got that free(20min), took another 10min to finish.

enjoy!
