95 maxima here and im getting worried about the timing chain tensioner clack noise. Recently its been getting cold down here, and the tensioner has been clacking alot longer than usual. On startup it normally does it on and off until car fully warms up, then it goes away once engine warms up, but recently I can still hear it even after car has fully warmed up, its not as loud as just starting the car but I can still hear it on and off while driving, this is my only car it has 227 k miles, is this sumthin I need to b worried about?

 

give the car 60 seconds to warm up and deal with it. Or spend money and replace it. I've been running mine with a bad tensioner for over 300K miles.

 

Thanks for the reply fallenone, maybe its just the cold weather down here that made it change I drove it until it fully warmed up, and eventually the noise went away, it just made me a little nervous at first hearing it longer than normal. I feel better now lol

Yeah the colder it gets the longer and louder the noise. My second 4th gen is rattling until the car gets 1/4th warm from the gauge and then stops..

 

I have a question regarding whether or not you've attempted to replace the tensioner behind the access cover near the PS pump? Also it really makes a difference on your oil viscosity your running as well thick oil takes longer to warm up and flow slower when cold.....So maybe you should lower your viscosity or add 1/3 of a can of seafoam to your oil the clean up your lifters and chain tensioner and it will operate quieter....GL!

 

I'm guessing add the seafoam to a freshly changed oil. How long do you suggest leaving it in before changing that oil?

 

Seafoam in oil, 3K miles.
Or just run 50/50 Synthetic.
Run 5W30.

Buy a remote start, its the best thing i ever did for my engine.

 

One thing i have learned is that if you are leaking oil, the longer it takes for it to go away. After redoing my engine two years ago and updating chain/guide, there is practically no noise and I am using Castrol GTX High Mileage 10w40.

 

Thanks for the suggestions guys I do have a small oil drip somewhere near the oil pressure swich, but I havent attempted to do my own tensioner job, I will try the sea foam, as it is getting close to change the oil Again.
