Informative Post. Q: Spark Plug Gap.

Curious, What does the gap on the spark plug do exactly?
I know it's important to have it set to 44 for the maxima. But why does it need to be at 44 and not 45, or 50? is it the the time for the spark to complete that is the reason? Basically timing kinda deal?

If the spark plug gap was different for each spark plug (ie: stupid mechanic not adjusting gap properly) what would it do for the engine? would it damage it? or?

Hopefully no one has asked these questions before. In my search for spark plug information about a half week ago, i don't remember seeing this info.
