factory springs modifying
Ive been watching the tv series called FAST N LOUD. they restore old school cars to resale for the quick profit. my question is that they cut off a row of the factory springs to lower the car, can this been done for any car like our 3rd gen?
Lol i heated springs on my first car just to experience the feel and it was horrible. I only did it because i was going to install my lowering springs the next day. Where can i get a good price on lowering springs ?
Cutting coils is much safer and common than heating the coils. I had heated coils in my first Maxima 13-14 years ago. I drove it around like that all during high school with no problems at all. I cut a full coil off the springs and it didn't hardly lower it at all, so we heated them. Would I do it again now that I can afford the money for lowering springs? No
In my opinion, cutting coils is not unsafe in any capacity whatsoever assuming your spring still mounts securely into the perches afterwards. Obviously you can't cut your springs in half and expect that to be safe as the spring can spill right out pretty easily when the suspension fully extends.
I personally wouldn't hesitate to cut coils assuming there are no other lowering options. Not that this justifies it, but people have been cutting coils to lower cars looooong before most of us were even born. With most mods, it's only unsafe if you F it up.
But, again, having said that - if there are readily available off the shelf options and you're not an idiot teenager, there's no reason to do either.

i completely agree with the above post, heating springs is unsafe, it takes the "spring" out of the spring and makes them more prone to cracking, and breaking, cutting the coils is fine if all you want to do is lower the ride height, that being said you have to make sure the spring still sits in the perch right just like the above post states. You should also take note that when you cut a coil off the spring, you make the spring rate higher, its shorter so it has less "spring" to coil up, so your ride will be alittle harsher/bouncy.

I saw that episode too. I think the reason they just cut the spring like that was because of how the spring was designed. Our springs dont have very many coils and are much larger diameter. The springs that were cut had a much smaller diameter and many more coils. The old design is probably more favorable to lowering by a simple cut. And if the car stays in Texas, it probably wont have to deal with roads that are too rough.
