I passed by all the parts stores on my way to work and saw that NAPA has some stuff called Sta Lube wich seems to be the only GL-4 I can find but its a 85W-90.

should I give it a try at $32 a gallon? they only sell it by the gallon....

 

GL4...and you need just under 3qts

I don't know anything about Sta Lube though. I used Redline MT85.

Swapped out Redline MT90 for MT85, because it's better.

I have Redline MT-85 as well. Shifts are smooth as butter now.

 

I used both Redline and Amsoil in my 6 speed and found that the Redline felt slightly better on cold mornings (personal and subjective), other than that, they were both way better than OEM.

 

I guess Ill run the STA LUBE stuff and if its not good ill order the MT85. gotta put something in there so I can drive it. im waiting to get my spindles back from the machine shop. both front wheel bearings were bad.

hopefully after all these repairs this car wont have any issues for a while. I've fixed anything I could find wrong while the tranny was out. I put in a new clutch kit OEM, oil pan and rear main, gutted all cats, front wheel bearings, cv axle seals, new rotors and pads up front, and megan springs with KYB GR-2 that the car came with. even had to change front and rear engine mounts on the subframe..

the STA LUBE works great. ive had it in my tranny for a little over a year, my tranny shifts real smooth in winter which was a concern since its real thick. its the only GL-4 I could find, only NAPA carries it and it was $32 .

Why can't you just order amsoil. You pretend like you live on the moon.

 

I like to be able to find products that are on the shelf when I need it. this is the only GL-4 on the shelf at any parts store and it works real good.

 

That's why you buy it from Amsoil and put it on your shelf for when you need it.

 

this stuff works great i'm sticking with it.


from what im seeing on the amsoil sight all there gear lubes are syntethic wich isn't good for syncros.

 

GL5 fluid eats the brass synchros in the tranny. Synthetic or regular GL4 fluid is fine.

 

I was told that synthetics have friction modifiers and aditives that reduce friction which causes the syncros to not work as well. i don't see any need for synthetic regular GL4 works fine....

I never run synthetic in gearboxes. Even my crx that uses motor oil in the transaxle I run a non synthetic valvoline motorcycle 20W50 SG grade oil. Tranny has over 290,000 miles and no grinds whatsoever. Most gear oils you find on the shelves of part stores are mainly for differentials.....

 

Well, Redline MT90 is highly regarded. Not only that, but the Nissan FSM specifies GL4 for the manual tranny, even for the manual tranny with VLSD that's in my I30t 5MT now. I've had no problems with it. In my previous maxima 5MT I had Redline MT90 in from the 39K miles i had it for until the 150K miles when it was totaled. Only tranny problem I had with the car was a throwout bearing which was replaced when a new clutch went in at about 140K miles.

In my present I30t, I bought it at 150K miles and immediately put in MT90. At 200K miles the OEM clutch finally wore out and replaced with new clutch and topped off the MT90. Only worn parts were the clutch, throwout bearing (which was whistling towards the end of the clutches life) and replaced the flywheel.

Essentially that thread says that the friction modifiers in synthetic tranny fluid such as Redline MT90 are not the same as friction modfiers in differential fluid, and that these tranny fluid friction modfiers are formulated to extend the life and drivability of the syncros. The posts by MolaKule go deep. He could write a 1000 page novel on gear oil alone lol. It would be classified under non-fiction.

Given all that reputable info, I think I'm good for the long haul with synthetic Redline MT90 GL4 in my gearbox.

 

the throwout bearing in my maxima went out about 3 weeks after I got it what a hastle, put a new clutch in myself on the driveway.


I don't see the need for synthetic oil in this tranny so im just going to stick with basic GL4. If my maxima was an autocross car I would go with redline but my maxima is just a get around car for when im taking the kids somewhere. I mainly drive my CRX.
