P1440

Hey sorry but I'm new to this web site.
Anyone able to help me with P1440
I've searched everywhere on here and can't find one thread
That has that code were it was actually solved.
Can someone else chime in on this code who has fixed it.

Hey Ray. The thing about evap codes is that there usually is no absolute cure. You have to do some work. The code gives the symptom but there can be many causes.

This is from a quick search I did on this site from magdocjr:

What does that mean?

This indicates a fuel vapor leak in the EVAP control system. It means a very small leak has been detected. In fact, the leak can be from a hole as small as 0.04" in diameter. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine.
Symptoms

You likely won't notice any drivability problems.
Causes

A code P1440 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:

* A loose or improperly affixed gas cap
* A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
* A small leak/hole in a fuel vapor hose/tube
* Other small leak in EVAP system
* Faulty vent o-ring seal

Possible Solutions

the most common repair is to:

* Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
* Otherwise, replace the gas cap, or
* Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses

I just replaced the purge valve and evap canister and that fixed the problem. I had to replace the canister because one of the bolts that attaches the valve to the canister broke off in the canister and removing it damaged the canister.

Smoke test is a good suggestion. This a common problem. Either it's the purge valve or the o-ring that is on the valve that goes bad. You're going to have to replace one of the two. I replaced the valve because it comes with a new o-ring. The code hasn't returned since.

How long did you drive? It takes awhile to go through the evap drive cycle. I thought I fixed mine by clearing code and passing etest with my evap system not ready. Now the code is back but its minor so cant be bothered.

If there still was a problem the code would have returned after 5 start cycles. It's been 10 days and about 25 starts.

Hey guys this is ray the original poster of this thread.
I have replaced gas cap with new Nissan cap from Nissan. And i have replaced 4 of the 1/4 inch hoses near the evap canister. I cant seem to post pics but i also replaced little green part that has two 1/4 inch hoses attached to it i cant remember what its called. I think its the canister vent valve. I think my next step is to replace the canister purge valve. Thanks for the help everyone.

The valve is the thing that is bolted to the evap canister. There a two 10 milimeter bolts that attach it to the canister. It has one electrical plug that you have to disconnect.
