I hated my Maxima yesterday

Yesterday was just a long and frustrating day.

For the last few months I have been dealing with a bad wheel bearing.

My buddy has a shop with a press so I decided to find the time and do it myself.

I picked up 2 new Moog hubs and bearings first.

Then I bought Moog balljoints and tie rod ends figuring that a bad bearing would toast the balljoint anyway and since I had to pop the tie rods I might as well do them.

It's been getting noisier and noisier so the weather wasn't bad yesterday so I thought I would start.

I got the car on jackstands. So far so good

I pulled the right front tire.

That's when the day started going bad. Last week I drove into one of our famous moon crater potholes. Everything seemed ok.

Well it isn't. About 1.5 inches of my rim has a flat spot on the inside lip.

I should have just started there.

Axle nut came off ok.

Then soaked everything with PB Blaster.

Caliper mount and bracket came off ok. Bracket as really tight.

Turns out my Hawk HP's are just about toast. Need to order tonight.

Popped the tie rod.

Marked the bolts on the strut and loosened them.

Next issue. Snapped the ABS Speed sensor bolt.

Sensor was in so tight I broke that. And then still had to pound out the broken piece.

Can the day get worse.

Sure it could.

Balljoint nut came halfway off and stopped. Shaft was spinning. And I couldn't hold it.

So 2 sawall blades later the ***** was off.

Did the left side and again broke ABS sensor bolt and then sensor itself. At least the ball joint popped off ok.

I guess the good thing was I was able to get the snap ring off and remove the balljoints from the lower CA with minimal beating.

I then headed to my buddies house.

We were able to push the hubs out easy enough.

Then it was time to get that ***** of a clip off.

What the hell is the matter with Nissan. Subaru and Toyota have snap rings with something to grab to remove them.

No so Nissan. First one took us 45 minutes. And that was after breaking 2 pick tools and then making a tool from a bent nail.

I then went home exhausted and spen the next coupld hours finding a deal on the ABS Sensors.

Today I have to drill out the broken ABS bolts and reassemble.

And figure out what to do about the bent rim.

I'm assuming I can drive the car with a ABS cell until the sensors come in?

Somebody cheer me up.

I was thinking of playing with matches last night

Hehe theres been at least one time where i threatened my max with violent death via scrapyard due to a snapped bolt in a terrible place..

I found that sweet talking the car rather than giving it death threats when its being a stubborn p.o.s. somehow makes things go smoother and causes less problems to arise. I suppose its all placebo but hey it 100% works for me so its worth a shot!

Yeah I have had those times too, where I wanted to just grab a wrench and smash every window and dent up every panel on my car. But when things are all done and over with and I am driving it again and see how fun it is to drive, all the pain is worth it!

Understood.

Put the spindles back on over the weekend and despite having no ABS it was sure fun to drive despite the bend in the rim.

I rotated the rim to the back and found a small bumble on that tire and a small flat spot on the lip for the rear tire too. Guess from the same crater pothole.

Now the question is finding rims or getting these straightened.

Took me and a buddy 6 hours to replace a swaybar endlink a few weekends ago thanks to the lovely nature of corroded bolts. It was very tempting to place a brick on the pedal and throw it in reverse

Sorry to hear that Murphy gave you a big dose. But you seem to be digging your way out in spite of it. Good for you. I hope it's all downhill now.

I hope so.

First of the replacement ABS sensors came today.

New Hawk pads are in transit.

And I found 2 rims at a local junkyard they claim are pristine for 125 each. Or I can get 2 that aren't perfect for 95.

The tires were from Costco (Michelin Pilots) and I hope the Road Hazard gets me new rubber.

Add the sensors and new pads this weekend and I'll be a happy guy.

Then I need to figure out what's wrong with my sons 99 Solara. Engine pulses at low RPMs. Tries to stall and throws misfires and EGR codes.

This isn't your thread. He's telling a story to which many of us can relate. That comment you just made is useless.

So, in first 10 lines, which I read, you decided to replace ball joints and tie rods because bearing was bad? How about reading service manual to find out how to check ball joints? Internet/forum search?

car5car doesn't seem to understand that this is a support website.

There are times when moral support is more important than technical support.
