Please read the thread titled "Oil and ATF Analysis Spreadsheet" up top.

Thank you.

You're not going to notice a significant difference in temp. unless you're really running the car hard. Synthetics will protect better in those cases and will help on start-up. For drain interval, clee130 showed you were it's at. Your water temp starting to climb at those mileages could be a corroded radiator, especially if the coolant hasn't been changed much, or it could be simply the water pump itself is starting to go.

my temp needle is at the center of the guage during normal operating temp too.

So is mine...ever since I bought it.

I think that's perfectly normal operating temp.

Running in the middle is perfectly normal; anything higher or lower would mean problems. This is not the oil temperature meter, I believe it's the coolant or water temperature gauage. That is why your car overheats when it goes too high.

I've been thinking about installing an oil cooler on my car. I'm using Mobil 1 tri-synthetic and have about 50K miles on it.

Right, this is the guage for water temp, there is no way to guage oil temp unless we install a guage ourselves. The normal reading is in the middle of the guage, if it is there everything is fine. Maybe I misunderstood the first post, I read it as the needle passed through the middle of the guage and was reading a little higher. Sorry if I alarmed people thinking all their cars had problems.

As mentioned before, the oil analysis sticky will give you some great info. I just drained Mobil 1 5w-30 after 8000 miles, and sent it in for analysis to see how it held up, but I'm still going to Amsoil anyway.

I noticed

When I used regular oil, my temp gauge was right smack dab in the middle. I switched to synth, and the temp gauge sat a bit lower than the middle. To prove my own point I switched back to regular to see what happens. After like 2 days, the needle went back to smack dab in the middle.

Now, I've settled on semi synthetic, and the temp gauge always stays just below the middle are. So, synth or even semi synth oil makes your car run cooler. If the temp gauge, which is measuring the coolant temp, not the oil temp, can see it, then that's really good, because its picking up the change in-directly.

By the way, I know this gut who has a jetta, and those cars have the digital temp gauges. He noticed a big drop in temp when he switched to synth oil.
