Alright, So I'm not a huge fan of the built in GPS in our car. I think it's out-dated and lacks a lot of the information and ease of use of the maps apps on my iPhone. So I set out to find a way to mirror my phone screen to the maxima screen.
I have the Tech package, so technically I already have GPS, but this should work for any Maxima with the color screen and RCA inputs in the center console.
To use this for maps while your car is in motion, you will have to perform the GPS bypass. Do this at your own risk. I'm not responsible for any damage to your car as a result of performing the procedure, or any damages/fines that result from your use of the features it enables.
I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. You can use this set-up to play music, even if you aren't mirroring your screen. I generally just use it to play music, and leave the native GPS screen up, but it's super easy to throw my google maps app up on the screen when I need it. Mirroring the screen will work with any app that supports the feature, all you have to do is hit the AUX button, and flip the bypass switch.
Additionally, I have a 2009 maxima. This year car doesn't have a USB port, but only has a 30pin apple plug that goes to this big funky connection. I tried a number of different adapters to try to make it work with my iPhone 5 (and later 6) and never had any luck. With this set up, I can listen to music from my phone again.
Here are all of the cables I used to make this work. From top to bottom:
Cable Jive Lightning Extender
(I like a little slack in the cable that plugs into my phone. This is the only thing that sticks out of the center console).
Here's what google maps looks like pulled up on the screen. (tried it with apple maps too, and it works, but I consider google maps far more accurate and easy to use).
Works for Music videos and such too, but I would only use this feature when the car is stopped.
I like how it doesn't clip the sides because of overscan on yours, iphone6 must have a different aspect ratio/resolution.
Jealous!
BUT
I am going to continue my project and try a odroid U3 single board. I want to just come into my car turn the key and have everything come on. I used to do the whole sit in the car for 5 minutes, turn on mirroring wait, then load gps wait, then make sure ration is set right, etc. A phone has everything packed in from the getgo unlike a board so its hard to say which takes the cake.
Expandability is awesome with the U3 because you can attach stuff to it ie steering wheel control adapters etc. I like all that stuff it just starts to add up.
Funny how we both ordered the same adapter at the same time -- surprised no one else has done it in the past!
Since you have a 2009 were the wires from the stereo the same as the 2011 in the bypass video? I'd like to do this in the near future. Great write up! Thanks!
Not sure, I did the bypass like 2 years ago. I don't remember there being any issues.
You need to ground the parking wire, but cut the vss as well, or the head unit will still display moving vehicle, grounding the parking wire just tells the deck the brake is on -- but not the ECU, VSS cut tells the headunit the car is not moving.

Just got all the parts for this and tried it out on my 2010 sv sport which has the colour screen but not the nav. I used the iPhone 6 and found the it didn't fill up the whole screen. I noticed when I did connect it, it said 720p 60hz. Could that be the issue?
Try streching the screen funnyman. It's in the options on the actual screen (maxima). I know the ipods had the feature as well don't have an iPhone so I can give exact instructions on where that might be
Thx mikekay
Actually funny u mention that. I was trying to go to the settings in the car and when I pressed settings and began scrolling down the options, the screen filled up fully like I wanted it.
But once I exited the settings area it went back to bars on the left and right.
I will try and see where the setting for stretch is..
To get it to fill up the whole screen, all you have to do is touch the screen while your iPhone mirror is showing up (I have tech pac, are all of the screens touch screen?) and then a little "settings" bar will pop up. Set it to "wide" and then press "OK"
