UPDATE! Found the best transmission deal on the planet!
Thanks to all the replied... I found a near impossible find! I looked at Harry's U Pull It's website and seen they had 19 Maximas between 1995 & 1998 so I decided to take the 40 mile ride to Hazelton PA and see what I could find... I was losing all hope at Maxima #17, all of them to that point were either automatic or the tranny was already gone. The 18th Maxima was pay dirt! A 1996 SE just like mine with only 77k miles that was rear ended. Harry's had an October special, Transmissions for $85 bucks, $15 off the normal $100! I nearly sharted myself! The first day I got the tranny nearly out less the 1 hard bolt just under the starter on the back side. Anyone that has ever removed a gen 4 5 speed knows the dreaded bolt I'm referring to... They closed at 4pm yesterday so I returned today, 10/24/2015 at 9am with my 2 6" 3/8ths wobble extensions, swivel and 17mm 6 point socket array required to ****** that bolt over the exhaust from the passenger side 14"s away. I made sure I was there at 9am so I didn't have to put a body in a trunk if someone tried to score my tranny!lmao I'm serious, If someone was wrenching the tranny I spent 2 hours prepping for removal the day before they would have ended up duct taped securely and stuffed in a trunk out in the back of the yard! Anyway, I was out of there with a 1996 5 speed with only 77k miles on it for $85 bucks plus $5.10 tax! The 40 mile return ride with it in the back of my buds truck seemed to take forever and I felt high! Though that may have been from the 2 20mg amphetamine pills I popped to get my old *** out of bed and wrenching under a junker 40 miles away by 9am...lol All in all it was a great day. Tomorrow it gets wire wheeled, washed down with gas and clear coated. Filled with synthetic gear oil and installed back in my old girl. No more dropping the clutch in her like an idiot no matter how much fun it is to see the smoke roll! I bought a bearing, synchro and seal kit but the old case had hairline cracks. I'm thinking about tig welding the old case and rebuilding it for a spare. I want to try making it into a reinforced case by spiraling stack of dimes tig welds around all the bearing locations 4 layers deep increasing the case thichness in the weak areas a full 1/2". There's plenty of clearance so that no issue there. I shouldn't have any cracking issues if I heat the case to 550 in an oven prior to each layer of dime welds then again after it's all done and letting it cool down slow in the oven to relieve the stress from all the welding. It can't hurt to experiment... If it comes through it will be a bullet proofed super tranny! Those old gen 4 5 speeds are notorious for cracking their eggshell thin cases. I will update with photos of the process and end result. If it turns out good I may beef up the new one too. I found a great deal on high grade Jap 5 speed bearing/synchro/seal kits only $216 delivered! Anyway, Thanks again to all that called & replied...
