Retrofitting remote unlock to a 97' Max

Hi everyone,

I have a New Zealand delivered SMX which didn't come with remote locking. I've tried locking the doors and inserting and removing the key in the ignition barrel 7 times to see if the hazards flash. It doesn't so I assume that means that the LCU05 I have doesn't support remote locking.

My question is, can I source a module from another Maxima that does support it and get a keyfob and expect it to work?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here in the U.S., if the car did not come from the factory with remote door lock, the BCM (Body Control Module) is different and the car did not have the LCU05 module installed.

Also missing is the solenoid to open what we call the trunk lid and the antenna wire connection for the LCU05.

Here is a link to a person whose car did not have the remote door lock and installed the option. It is a bit long because it was not created as a how-to, it instead covers the discovery and learning process. It does contain all the detailed information needed.

You can get the BCM and LCU05 from another car as long as it is the same year as yours. 95 & 96 use one style, 97 & 98 another style and the 99 was different again (I think).

all the maximas i believe are pre-wired for it, not sure if all the 4th gen years are included in that.

I had at look at mine today and it appears to have the provisions for it such as the relay for the boot release. I'm gonna track down the correct BCM and other pieces if I can get them at a reasonable price and see what happens.

Just get a Viper. I went through the same thing...spent $26 on a Viper and $40 to install. Works perfectly. I don't have electric trunk release so still have to use the key, but great to have the doors lock and unlock / lights flash.

Do they play nicely with the factory alarm?

Not sure, evidently mine had the flashing security light but no alarm. Do you have the factory receiver for the factory fob mounted behind the trunk trim panel ? That's how I knew mine had no system.

I don't think it would be an issue either way tho.

It doesn't have the receiver but I do know that the alarm works (its gone off a few times before). I might look into it a bit more.

as stated in my earlier post, your maxima is pre-wired from factory for the keyless entry. you just have to get a remote and the box in the trunk and it's 2 wires and you set it and done. maxima joe in classified probably has the relay box, you have to get the one for your year only for it to work.

You also have to replace the BCM. If you have the wrong BCM, You won't be able to go into programming mode for the remote.
