Experiences... Master Cylinder replacement

So..... Aftermarket (and which) or OEM that I can get for $220 new?

Mine has 209K and is original and 19 years old. Starting to leak into the power booster. Is it worth $220 for another one with that kind of reliability?

I also did the front bearings, retainer clips and seals and still have noise, especially on curves banking left. What Hub assemblies perform like OEM?

Thanks 4th Gen fans!

KP, you might want to consider disassembling your master cylinder. RemovEthe plunger/brake piston. These are replaceable.

look inside the brake cylinder bore. Unless it is pitted or scored, it can be reused.

I just checked my local NAPA. The part is called a Master Brake Kit . The cost is less than 20 dollars

for that matter, our brake calipers are also rebuildable. Cost is about 5 bucks per side.

Keith,

I have no experience with master cylinder replacement. But, what I have found is that Genuine Nissan parts houses are selling MCs made by aftermarket parts makers. So ... IMO it's a crap-shoot. If you're asking for advice, I'd say buy a quality piece from a reputable aftermarket manufacturer but ensure it comes with a LLT.

As far as bearings go, I've done this a few times. I've found that brand new replacement bearing failures are absolutely related to the quality and accuracy of installation.

Every time I've had a shop install new bearings in my knuckle ... they fail (noise). Once I started removing and pressing in my own ... no issues.

Gentlemen,

I thank you both for your advice. And it's good advice!

I will start with a NAPA rebuild kit for the Master Cylinder for sure! As long as there are no scores, why pay for metal when all I need is seals and O rings.

Tb, as far as mechanics pressing bearings noisy... I have won the jackpot!

Why the hell do you live so far away? LOL I don't have a press AND a place to store it! I can get each knuckle out in 30 minutes though. Pisses me off because I did the tie rod ends as I was reinstalling the knuckles with the new bearings. I hate to break a tie rod end when so new. (and aligned)

Sunny FL sounds so much better! But please..... Turn up the heat!

If the bearings were new and went in noisy, does that mean I need another set (NSK) or just to reseat them? < 1K miles

Thanks again!

Master Cylinder isn't worth reusing. It would need to be re-honed and I'm not buying the equipment to use it once in my life.

So what would you guys use? I have a 99 SE with traction control and 4 wheel ABS.

Thanks as usual!

Like I said Keith, it's kind of a crap-shoot nowadays IMO.

I've installed a few Cardone Select (which are new) parts and haven't had any problems to date.

Depending on where you purchase, a LLT is typically included which I feel is a must.

Rock Auto sells them but if a failure happens it's mail order return and resend.

Your local parts store will likely carry an equivalent but the cost is gonna be a good bit more, I'd imagine.

Man, you aren't kidding..... There's crap everywhere. (I used a shotgun) LOL

Three from the herd of crap shot contenders are Raybestos Premium Grade Master Cylinder: MC390233 and Centric Parts Premium Brake Master Cylinder: 130.42408 and Cardone Select: 13-2654.

All of these are for 99's with 4 wheel ABS.

However, Cardone Select is the only one offering LLTW and priced right in between the other two.

Sadly, there's not much out there on Customer Ratings on any of these. That could help lock in the right selection much faster.

You wouldn't believe the choices for the replacement Power Booster.... Nothing new, only rebuilt and very few to choose from. And of course, that damned "Core" charge problem when buying online.

Now I'm really frustrated! I prefer New with value and quality.

Since I've had decent experiences with Dorman products, I would be tempted to get a Dorman M390233.

Advance is selling the same part as MCA390233 with LLTW. Use the current Advance 20% off discount code FE84 and the price before tax comes in lower than Amazon.

Here's the Amazon link.

Amazon Amazon

Ding Ding Ding, we have a winner!

The expensive Raybestos Premium Grade Master Cylinder: MC390233 is the same part number as the Dorman and the same part as the Advance.

KP is this starting to look like CV axles?

I'm telling you this whole parts thing is getting incestuous!

Cats living with Dogs. Dogs living with Cats.

And before we know it, there'll be Puttens and Kippies.

And NONE of all the choices with anything more than three ratings, if any at all.

I want LLTW, so Cardone Select or AA's offering is most likely going to be the one. Sure as Doo Doo, AA doesn't stock these in their stores and it has to be shipped. Meaning a few days round trip, if it ever fails. I'll check with Parts Authority on Monday to see if they stock the Cardone Select. Hopefully if they do, their price with tax will be inline!

Quality Parts for these is getting like a tooth extraction lately!

Keith, I tell ya ... I found this same issue a number of years ago associated with my truck ('94 Ford).

Whats the most irritating to me is that many dealer parts counters are selling repackaged aftermarket parts as "genuine" and at "genuine" prices.

THAT pisses me off.

Nothing a shotgun AND a six pack (of Molotov cocktails) couldn't fix!

If there's anything to take away..... It's NEVER love any vehicle too much and make sure you have enough income to remedy the long breakdown process right as it starts with something newer!

Otherwise there's a good chance we'll all...... Assume the position!

Here's to the continued torture!
