Deep pothole destroyed (at least) both right tires, what to do now?

Hi everyone.

I have a 2016 SR.

I was driving tonight in the rain on a bridge on my commute home, and a pothole (which we have a lot of), took out my tires. I wasn't even driving fast, nor could I see it, but even if I had, there was probably no avoiding it (between traffic and edge of bridge).

It was crazy, I went into the pothole and came out and immediately my tire pressure warning came up showing two blown tires.

I'm sure there's also additional damage, to the rims, and possibly to the undercarriage - the SR rides so low. I couldn't really see (dark, driving rain). I'll have to call AAA
tomorrow and take it to the dealership or somewhere.

So, questions:

Has anyone dealt with pothole damage to the SR before?

Should I go to the dealership route or a body shop?

Something I should make sure they inspect?

If by some miracle it's just the tires, do I replace just two or all four? Car only has about 15k miles on it, I have to check the inspection report from last week on the tread depth.

Does anyone know what are the standard OEM tires on the Maximas?

Hurts my heart to read this, but thank God you are ok.

Without a DOUBT, go to the dealership for inspection and repair!!! They'll know what to check for..... potential suspension damage (A-arms, ball joints, tie rod ends, alignment etc)

At 15,000mi....you're kinda in the grey as far as needing 2 or 4 tires...totally depends on tread depth. You should be able to get away with only needing 2 unless you've been doing a lot of hard cornering.

Similar thing happened to a friend of mine. He went back to the hole and took photos and managed to make the local Department of Raods and Bridges Maintenance pay for his repair. It'll be a major pain dealing with them, but depending on the total cost of your repair, could be worth the time to try!

As far as the tires, It's ok to have some mismatch, but normally you'd replace both on the same axel. In that put the 2 new tires on the front, and more warn out ones in the back. That said, me personally once a tire has been on one side of the car, I only rotate front to rear, so in your case me personally, I'd just replace all 4. You get a better deal on them at firestone like that, in that you can sometimes get around a buy 3 get one free type discount. That way too you can get a non OEM tread...pick something better for wet weather, or get you some runflats...

Yikes, so sorry to hear about your ordeal

There's nothing worse than braking down, at night, in the rain, on a bridge.

Glad you came through it ok, even though the car needs some work.
