On my 3rd starter in just one year
Last year my aftermarket starter died on me after giving me about 8-1/2 years. My OEM was going strong since I bought my 1995 Maxima in 1994 until it died on me after giving me 16 years of service. I put in an aftermarket starter last year and after almost 90 days it gave up on me. Mechanic put in another starter for me at no charge and that was doing OK since summer of last year. This week out of nowhere it died on me. Have been limping along doing the screwdriver and hammer tap on the starter thing. Going Saturday to put another starter in. I don't want to be left in the cold with an unreliable starter. Any recommendations for a good starter brand for a 1995 Maxima SE?
Please see my earlier post regarding aftermarket starters vs the OEM starter-
I tried 3 different aftermarket starters from O'Reilly's in the past year, all of them failed within 3-4 month span.
This last time (a few weeks ago) I got a used OEM starter from the salvage yard and compared the two-- the OEM starter had 11 teeth on it whereas the O'Reilly's one only had 10. I am convinced this caused the aftermarket starters to slip on the flywheel and thus have to exert more force to start the engine, leading to a much shorter life span.

Roughly 6 or 7 years ago, I installed a Remy Rebuilt start that I pulled from a salvage yard car. It was still working last year when we stopped driving the car. I've had ok luck with Advance Auto rebuilts from Mexico. Terrible luck with new starters made in China from Advance. The new O'Reilly starter lasted about a year. I think if I need to buy another starter I will get a Bosch rebuilt from NAPA.
The number of teeth on the starter has changed several times since the VQ engine was introduced. The reason for the change was because of starting problems. The engine cranking speed was not sufficient to develop a reliable signal from the CKPS[POS] flywheel crankshaft sensor.
11 teeth is the one you want to have.
