98 Max shifter won't go into 1st- auto trans
What about when the car isn't running? Could be a speed sensor on the transmission behind the driver's wheel and fender liners.
If not that, shifter linkage and/or shifter cable might be corroded. IT happens a lot with parking brake cables as well.
Year, model, mileage and location provide clues, along with history if possible,. that's how it works in forums. If you don't provide much, that's what usually becomes the result.

Define : won't go into first gear.
Do you mean that the shift lever won't go into first gear, if you shove it there by hand?
Is it possible if the car is not running?
Or is it possible if the car is running?
Does it go into neutral or reverse.
does it go onto other gears?
Can the car drive in second or higher gears?
WE NEED MORE INFORMATION.

Had the same thing happen when I replaced the solenoids in my I30. I opened the trans up and found that I hadn't pushed the rod that connects to the shift lever up far enough so it was not engaging the shift lever with the trans. I did that and the car drive and goes into gear perfectly now. Also check remove the trim around the shiftier and see if the shift interlock solenoid is moving when you push the brake. Mine failed and I have to use a Flathead to manual push it into gear.

Aembleton that is exactly what it was thanks! Unfortunately the shift solenoid repair kit made no difference...it goes in drive fine but will not shift into second gear...reverse is fine too...any ideas on that? Really hoping trans isn't shot
Trans shift solenoid repair kit did not change the issue at all. Yes, pan bolts tight. It shifts in reverse & goes in drive strong, but will not shift into second. Diagnostic codes P0325, P0110 & P1105 is what it is now showing. Checked the tps it showed good, checked the map/baro sensor also tested good. I suppose the transmission could be toast, but I am not giving up just yet. Anyone with any ideas please?? O/d light not flashing
