Hit some plastic, now auto gear shift is screwy

Last night I was following a car and all of the sudden a piece of plastic or somthing comes flying out of no where and hits up under my car. I notice that the gear shift (auto) has gone into nuetral but is still driving like it is in drive. Moving it back and fourth felt really strange (mushy.) I pull over and can't really see anything. I get back in the car and the shifter is better but when I put it into 1st it feels real mushy and strange as far as the shifter is concerned, the car seems to have no problems with any gears. Any thoughts? I looked under the car and can't see anything. I was wondering what on the outside of the car moves when you move the shifter from P R D 2 1? If I knew that I could have a look in that area and see if there is somthing wrong. Any thoughts?

This morning everything feels normal except the shift into 1st, it is just not smooth like it used to be.

I am positive. I can't explain it very well other than to say it feels like I am pushing the gear shift into rubber when I am putting it into first, it does not 'click' into first anymore like it used to. All other settings P R N D 2 feel fine.

BUMP for what moves on the outside of the car when you move the automatic shifter.

if you look up at the auto tranny, you'll see the lines that come from the shifter attach to a device on the side of teh auto tranny, if i remeber right, it's on the left side of the car...

Make sure tha'ts ok

seximagtr is right. Underneath the front end, driver's side, on the side of the tranny facing the front. It's the only linkage looking thing there. Could possibly have been loose and knocked out of adjustment. Adjust the linkage till it starts while shifter is in park and neutral, and no others. Tighten nut.
Do you have the plastic water shields on the bottom of your car? Those should have stopped whatever hit it.
