Does your P/S whine?

Just wanted to know if this was a common complaint. My power steering whines. It seems to have gotten louder over time. There is nothing visibly wrong w/ the P/S system (it's also been recently replaced). So to sum it up, my general question is: does everyone else's P/S whine when sitting still about to make a turn. When I'm cruising on the highway I can't hear it over the intake and stuff, but if I'm in a parking lot or something and I start turning the wheel you hear the noise. IT sounds like the car is struggling but there is no other evidence of a problem. The car doesn't shake or stall or anything like that. IT JUST SOUNDS BAD Thanks.

Is the fluid low??? It will whine and groan if the fluid is low at all. That's the first thing that I would check.

I posted about my groan a while back but I guess people didn't feel it was as important to reply to as the ypipe, spring, and CAI threads My PS doesn't make any noise under normal conditions, but when I turn the wheel all the way to the right and return it to center it makes a groaning noise. I checked my PS level and it was fine so I don't really know where else to look. The strangest thing is it only does it on the right side. If it did it on both sides I'd suspect the pump or something.

Hey, thanks for the responses. The fluid is fine and there is no problem w/ the steering other than the noise. Oh well. xHypex, since you say your sound only comes from the right side; is it possible that the stop limit is misadjusted? I also understand that there are adjustments that can be made to the P/S rack, so maybe yours are out of adjustment. It's probably an arm and a leg to get it corrected So, I am going to ignore my sound until I can no longer easily steer.

i have been hearing a whining noise fomr my car at night when i have the headlights on and stereo @ full blast. I thought it was the alternator, but then i saw antifreeze all over the pavement yesterday - took it to the dealer and they said the sound was coming from the pump th whole time

Has the fluid ever been changed? Just curious if the cars have higher milage maybe it could be that. Just a guess though.

Mine does the same thing (even before the little disc incident in another thread). I remember from somewhere that you really weren't supposed to hold the steering at full lock for more than 15 seconds or so. Of course, mine whines after a second or two.

Perhaps coincidentally, soon after I noticed this, I took it to the dealer for regular service and they told me the ATF was burnt. After they flushed the system, the noise was gone too. From then out it's been off and on and I never really bothered to check for a pattern to it.

I mentioned this in another thread recently, but anyhow I had the whining when turning left or right after my car had sat from lunch to the end of the day when it was cold outside.

I went to the dealer and had the two accessory belts changed and no more noise from the power steering since then.

I will check my belts tomorrow, otherwise everything is looking fine. The belts looked good and didn't seem loose, but I'll check again. Thanks.
