Raced a Volvo 850....

It was from a stop, I have a 95 GLE with intake and catback, and he has either a 850 with 190 HP or 222 HP, he doesnt even know (auto as well). I brake torque till 1500, and he doesn't. I whomp him off the line- thank god for that sweet spot in our power band around 3000. Anyways, I only got to 40 MPH because of a red light, but he pulls up and says he'll beat me in the high end. I'm not sure what to think, but I wanna try just to see if hes right. My question is if his turbo will crush me from a roll. Any ideas? Oh, and I plan on getting a stick some time soon, so don't say anything about my autotragic!

I don't think he had a turbo because he would have been right there with you. 850 GLT's have *****. I had a V70 GLT (same car as the 850)as a company car and this thing was just as fast as my Max.

850 GL = 168 HP(have to of them in the driveway, there not fast)
93-96 850 GLT's have 168 too
97 GLT has 190 HP, it use a low compresion turbo charger, this car would give you a run for your money but you should be able to beat him.

95-97 850 turbo has I thing 228 HP(could be a fewe HP off), this car will beat you, there good for about 7 seconds 0-60 and low 15's in the 1/2 but with high trap speeds. From a roll it's all ovewr for you.

850 R(AKA T5 for 97's) is lowered, has 17's and tweaked turbo that makes I think 238 HP, this car will woop you . 6.6 0-60 and high 14's stock at around 98 MPH. I love this car!

Ohh yeah, did it have rims or hub caps? 15's, 16's or 17's? OEM not aftermarket.

Ewok. Are T5 upgrades pricey? I like the older T5R w/ the anthracite 17" spoke rims. I think chip, intake, exhaust is 280-300hp at the flywheel??

What do you meen by T5 upgrades exactly? You can get a chip at www.ipdusa.com and a cat-back system for about $1500. That will give you about 285 HP! You can get a down pipe too, those seem to add some big HP #'s too. So for like $2000-2500 G's you will be putting down about 250 FWHP, take the turbo badge off and you are the ultimate sleeper! God I love those cars, some day I will get one just to tinker with .

Just meant the T5r versions. If I ever replace the maxima, I might play with one also. As used cars, they all seem to age very well. Very nice paint and interior quality. Do you know of any engine weaknesses?

Volvos are solid! Volvos have been in my family since I was 4 years old. My older brother had a 84 Volvo 240(4spd with overdrive ) it had over 300K miles on it! Original tranny, clutch and engine. I can't temember one thing ever braking on that sucker. I learned how to drive a manual on that car too. The body started rotting out so we had to junk it . My bro now has my first car, it's 1990 740, it took a harsh beating from me daily for 50K miles . The only thing that needed replacement was one ball joint from me getting air borne with it(for real!). He has it now with 190K mile, original everything! We also had a 85 Volvo 240 Wagon, we sold that to my bro too, it had 160K miles on it. It kept going strong with no problems until over 200K miles, they junked it for a newer car. My dad has a 94 850 with 115K miles and thus far only the rear main seal needed to be replaced and the heated seat switch. my mom has a 97 850 with 85K miles and it's always been perfect. We also had a 85 240(my brother first car) and it had about 155K miles when he totaled it.

One of my best friend's has a 96 850 Turbo with 215K miles, the car runs as good as new and look's awesome! These car's are the best car's on the road IMO, there bullit proof, good looking(850 on+) and are really safe. I came real close to getting a S70 T5 5spd, some times I wish I did get it.

My 97 and 98 V70 and S70 GLT's (did that sound right?) had 190HP with the sprt tranny so you can select Sport vs. Econo modes. The 190HP version is the low pressure 5 cylinder engine. I dusted tons of cars with them both too.

he has a 96 or 97 850 with auto, but he dropped in a new engine because he blew the old one. he says he has between 205 and 225 HP. i dont know how he doesnt know what he has under the hood, the dude is sorta dumb. also, how had it torque braking for my car? i think thats how im gonna be winning races from now on since my damn auto is so slow....

I'll bring my car the next time we have a SoCal (LA) meet and then we can do some runs. My car is a slow biatch off the line, but once it spools, whoa, hold on baby!

Yummy, I love Volvos - great cars for poor immigrants (what my parents had). I want to relive those days...

dayum!!

I didn't realize how solid and fast Volvo's are. I was under the impression that since Ford bought out Volvo their quality had dropped but maybe I'm wrong...

I'll definitely check out Volvo's when it comes time to buy my next car!

Yup, they're fast. I had one that seemed to be a freak and that car was a killer. I miss it.
