help...gas isn't burning right...

89' 5 spd maxima with close to 200k miles. My car's been burning up a lot of gas. Everytime I start it up, I smell gas coming out of the muffler and the ground is wet with gas. My mechanic says the coolant temperature sensor is broken. Any ideas what this problem is? My emission control light comes on intermittently too.

If you're trying to fix your car without a mechanic I suggest you get ahold of a repair manual. It will help diagnose the problem and may (not 100% sure - I have the FSM) have the trouble codes the engine's computer can spit back at you.

Find out what makes your car run horribly rich like that and the related parts, and troubleshoot from there.
