OSCAI and K&N

Hi all:
havent seen a lot of you for a while....yup, I have been missing for half a year or more. How is everybody? The main reason that keeps me away from this forum is my work and my gf (where my car budget goes straight to gf budget). I am still alive and my max is running great, it hits 23k not long ago and few months later, it will be 2 year old. Anyways.....
Since there was soo much rain last few weeks so I decided to open up my hood and take a look at my air filter. I washed it last time and I guessed I put too much filter oil. So the oil went thru the clean side of the car and left a mess there. I cleaned it and I notice something: on the clean side of the filter box, there is a metallic grill. I wiped it down and I noticed that there is a lot of black particles. Just my question to all the users of OSCAI and K&N, have you ever seen this? Is this normal? one of the cause that I can think of is the back fire from the engine....

thanks for your help.

Are you saying your engine is backfiring? If you’re having ANY problems at all, take that K&N out and go to the dealer- there’s a good chance you got oil on your ($500) MAF sensor. I’m assuming these particles you’re talking about are on the MAF screen, which I haven’t checked since I put the OSCAI in.

I’ll check it this weekend and let you know if I see anything, but it doesn’t sound normal.

hey, thx for checking. Those oil drops are from the filter where I over filled it last time when I clean it. and yes, those black particles are found near the screen. Not sure about the MAF sensor and what's the symptoms if the oil got to the snesor? so far the oil are trapped near the bottum of the box.

I checked my friends integra where he used K&N as well...same thing observed and he does have some black particle (not as much as mine) on the clean side of the box.

thx again for the help

So, the black particles are a good thing or a bad thing???? I realize if its stuff getting through the filter that is very very bad... If it's just excess oil or whatever then I guess its not nearly that bad unless its clogging the screen, right?

I checked my screen this weekend. It’s clean as a whistle, not a single black mark anywhere. Oil is bad if it gets on your MAF sensor, because it could ruin it. I don’t know what to tell you from here, exccept that if you start having any problems you should cover your tracks the best you can.

BTW, I have 27,000 miles. K&N since 7,500 and have not oiled it yet.

I hope those black particles are due to over oiling the filter. The filter oil are used to trap particles and prevent it from going into engine. I wipe my maf screen with a clean fiber-free wipe and turned out that I have a lot of those particles....they are not cloggin the screen about around the ring. do you observe this?

weather it is bad or not....I think if u can wipe something off, that means the engine have enough power to pick off some of it and send it straight into it. But on the good side, if it is mixed with filter oil, then it is more difficult to suck it in.

Adboy, I started K&N at 4000 something...so we are having the similar age of K&N and OSCAI. I cleaned it last time and I am going to check it again this afternoon if I start to see anymore black particles, I will have to stop using it. Would you know the kinds of problem if my MAF sensor are ruined?

thx
