Pulling Hard Left with Michelin A/S

Has anyone notice their car pulling left under acceleration with these tires. Since install the A/S's mine pulls left at a rate directly proportional to acceleration. As soon as I let off the gas, it goes back to the right. What gives?

The dealer checked the aligment (suspect?) and said it was fine. Still pulled left. He then put on a set of stock Potenza and no more pull. He therefore concludes that the tread pattern is too agresive for the the car.

B/S or what? Thanks for your feed back

sounds like a bad case of torque steer. Someone posted a couple of weeks back that he bought a used 2000 and that it torque steered like crazy. Hard to believe tires can have that much effect on something like that, maybe they do?

It is possible Nissan actually did test different tires on these cars and found the Potenzas caused the least amount of torque steer. I was looking to replace the stock tires with something like the Pilot Sports, might not be such a good idea after all.

This may sound strange...

but I believe it has to do with how hard a launch you can make...(no, don't jump all over this as a 'no crap, stupid' comment...hear it out)...

When I had the RE92's I THOUGHT I was making hard launches and had little torque steer, and yes I know I have a VLSD in my AE...but...after getting a set of Yoko's, I truly believe the better traction allows for even more aggressive launches and thus more torque hitting the front wheels. I think something in the RE92's has you subconsicously limiting your launch since you know they will break loose...

Hey, just a thought!

if your tire *could* have a slipped belt.

Find a tire place with a Hunter road force balancer. It can sense anomolies in the tire.

http://www.gsp9700.com/

you can find a local shop on their site. otherwise, its just torque steer.

Comments from A/S Sport users??

Thanks for the input guys. Sorry that I disappeared for a while but I took a roadtrip with my lady (in her Intrepid because the Max is unsafe).

I know what torque steer feels like. I had a 2k SE 5sp for 2yrs and I have been driving my 2k2 HLSD for two weeks on the stock Potenzas.

Two things make me believe it is the tires and not just standard TS:

1) It pulls left with even the tiniest acceleration either rolling or from dead stop

2) I have never gotten torque steer at highway speeds until installing the Michelin A/S sports. Now, if I'm doing 80 and want to accelerate to 85, I have torque steer pulling me hard into the left lane. The dealer also mentioned that the Max has assymetrical drive shafts. The left being shorter than the right so the torque gets to the left wheel that much faster.

I am having the installer switch the front two tires on Monday as suggested by TireRack. If the car then pulls to the right, that may mean a bad tire and they will send out a new one asap.

Let me know if you guys think of anything else. Otherwise, I will keep you posted

Re: Comments from A/S Sport users??

I just put a set on.... I definitely don't get a pull to the left. If anything, I find the car drifts to the right a bit... but could be alignment since I haven't had one in several months.

When I got my Nittos, though, turned out I did have I had a bad tire causing a bad pull.

pretty sure it's the alignment

I just got the A/S's too and immediately noticed the car was pulling to the right. I had the shop rebalance the tires and it still pulled. Took it to get an alignment and it doesn't pull at all anymore.
I guess since these tires are pretty sticky they probably tend to magnify any misalignment.

Tire Pressures could be the culprit too

My 2K has pulled hard to both the right and left at times in its life.
Everytime I've discovered unbalanced or low tire pressure caused the problem. Try different tire pressures until you find a good balance. A good quality tire gauge is a must, you gotta' balance left and right tire pressures right on the nose, I can feel even the slightest differences in L/R tire PSI in my car.
Pilot Sport A/S have a Max pressure (51 PSI) higher than the RE92's (44 PSI)so a theory could be that they a need higher PSI to work better.

Just a thought.

Resolved!

It turned out to be a bad tire on the RF that was pushing left. TireRack sent out a new tire and the problem is gone! I am relieved because I love the way these tires handle/corner/ride but I was constantly fighting to keep the car tracking straight.

Some follow-up thoughts:

1) Props to the org members for support/feedback
2) As always, Nissan service was helpful but full of $hit ("half-shaft")
3) I am running 32psi because much above that and I start to feel every bump
4) These tires make the FSTB even more of a necessity
