As many people mentioned in past threads, taking the O/D off, does increase acceleration when pressing the gas pedal...especially on the highway. I get an instant response with O/D off on highway when i press gas.

The manual suggests to leave O/D on. So i was wondering does it in anyway danger the tranny, is it not good for tranny?

Unless you're going to be pushing the car past its redline in 3rd gear why should it matter? I come from an exclusively standard background (and I know VERY little about automatic trannies other than the basic idea of how they work), but I can't imagine why keeping overdrive off should matter. Generally I drive with overdrive off when I want to have some fun on the highway, but I keep it on to reduce engine noise when I'm just cruising.

 

lol, i set my od like when i first got my car and never touched that button since. Forgot, when is OD on, when button is pushed in or out? I heard OD saves a lot of gas when driving...that's why i always have it on....made for highway driving i suppose

 

yes, supposedly it saves more gas because it idles at a higher rpm and therefore that's the reason you can accelerate quicker(correct me if im wrong).

But is it bad for tranny....and is it bad for tranny if i turn it ON/OFF while driving?

 

when the button is IN, O/D is on; when the button is pushed out O/D is off and u will see the orange o/d off light up by ur speedometer; O/D should be on for normal driving because the lower rpms will save u gas, but when racing O/D should be off since u will eliminate ur fourth gear, which will allow u take 3rd gear to redline (just stop accelerating once u get to redline in 3rd gear, or i would assume damage could occur)

 

If you try and do 130+mph with OD off your not exactly respecting your investment in your tranny. I dont F with that button at all cuase it makes no difference in 1/4 mile times and its all in your head that your acceleration is quicker.

If you mean your at highway speeds and you hit the button turning the OD off you get a response thats called a downshift. = not god fro auto tranny in long run...me 2pennies..worth little.but my trans is at 140K original.

 

Use it in city traffic where your tranny is constantly shifting into OD when it does not need to . Dont get into the habit of playing with it and knocking it on and off......

 

The O/D button is not a nice piece of *ss, quit playing with it. The only time you really need to mess with it is when you are in traffic @ less than 60mph or stop and go, to avoid unnecessary up and down shifting on the tranny since you are stopping and going. Other than that, like some other people said, leave it in D.
