I think the only way to answer your question is for you to drive the 4th gen and 5th gen and see which you like. I will never be able to sink $$ into a 5th gen based on the looks, but some people seem to like it. The 5th gen is probably a better car overall, and these cars really suffer resale-wise after 24 months or so, so you could take advantage big-time of the owner of a 2001.

Then again, if money is no object why not get a brand-new RS-X? I don't know what availability is like, some of these new cars are hard to get. My buddy went looking for a 2k3 Hyundai Tiburon and they are scarce. The dude told him they sold 3 in the last week and they only had one 6-spd left for now. They were inflexible on the price and he couldn't test drive it!! Sounds like trying to buy a '97 Camry when they first came out.

I personally would get a 1999. The 5th's are really ugly in my opinion, but you will get into the the new body style. The 4th gen is kind of outdated since it was made since 95, and most normal people can't tell the difference between a 95 or 99. I'd go for the 4th gen, you'll get a better price, and it's still almost as new. Put some nice wheels on it, and it will look 10 times better than a 5th gen. Oh, and if you want more replies from people that own these cars try and get this posted in the General Maxima discussion or 5th and 4th gen forums. Whatever you get, let us know.

Why don't you get the G35? That's an amazing car, and is in the same price range as 2k2 Maximas. Your decision, but since $$$ is not a problem for you in making the decision - then I'd personally say go for the G35. Infiniti is going to be coming out with a G35 Coupe if that sparks your interest. Good luck!

P.S - If you just want to buy another Maxima, then go for another 4th Gen (97-99), unless your looking to get a 2k2 Max... which for some reason looks a lot better than the other 5th Gen Maximas'.

To each his own.
Meaning, go and test drive them and decide for yourself. Drivers on this board tend to reccomend what they have, hence it is a little biased. BTW, 4th Gens are better.

You need to answer some questions first, or people will just tell you to buy what they own themselves.

1. Why do you need another car?
2. Is it replacing your maxima?
3. What are you looking for in another car (features)?
4. Do you care about rear seat room?
5. What do you think makes a "hotter max", looks, performance, or some combination?
6. What kind of performance do you want? (1/4 mile, highway, track, etc.)
7. Are you planning specific mods for the car?
8. Do you want a manual or an automatic?
9. Do you want HID headlights or are you going to install HIDs?
10. Have you thought about the G35?

Do lots (and lots) of your own research. Decide what your needs and priorities are. Find out what each car offers, what mods are available, and what each car's strong and weak points are.

THEN ask more pointed questions later on if you're unsure. (Example: "Is the handling really better for X year, but the ride worse?") Or something like that. Don't let others wholly decide for you. Good luck!

if you don't mine/like the styling of the 5th gen I say go for it,
theres rear cupholders , rear supension feels more solid, dashboard looks more high tech, better steering wheel feel & a few more reasons...

get a 97-99 maxima they are the safest our of the maxima's http://www.hwysafety.org/vehicle_rat...html/97024.htm. the 95-96 models are death traps. http://www.hwysafety.org/vehicle_rat...html/95012.htm
and the 2000-02 models is in the middle of the maximas http://www.hwysafety.org/vehicle_rat...html/00015.htm

imo, the 97-99 models look the best. I love the way black, red, and white SE maxima's look. i think it takes a lot to make the 5th gens look good. just clear out those 97-99 taillights, and you are set to go. I really wish my dad would let me buy a used car.

also this is very important, if you're getting an auto I think you should stick with a 4th gen auto, they shift A LOT faster.

HELL YEA THE NEW Infiniti's are HOTTTT!, but what i meant by price, is that if i spend 15 or 16k on a '99 max, or 20k on a 2000 max...i can afford a 2002, Sorry what i really meant by the money thing, is i am willing to spend up to like 20k and th 97-2000 maxima' will range in this price, so it wouldnt matter!.....But honestly, i like both the 5th and 4th generations....but leaning more towards the 4th gen.....because they do look alot better!!!

thank alot anyways!

Even though I have a 98 SE, I'm not biased since I only bought it a few weeks ago. I considered many cars including 97-2K2 Maxima's. Overall I have always thought the 97-99 SE is by far the best looking Maxima. (Especially Superblack, Pearl White, Neptune Blue all with Black Leather). The 2K1 AE is very nice as well,(bronze headlights, Polished 17's, Body Kit, especially Pearl White or Majestic Blue with black leather) but you will never find a good deal since they are sort of collectors items. I still wanted to go for a 2K2 because of the astonishing performance and Lexus like interior. I decided against it mainly because I knew my headlights would be stolen within 4 weeks, and once they would be replaced, they would once again be stolen within 4 weeks. I would never consider any 99+ Acura TL or CL for the same reason. Also, it feels much better to own a car outright plus you also save a lot on insurance since the car is yours and doesnt belong to the bank (Forcing you to get the ridiculous coverage they want). If I were you I'd stick with a 97-99 SE, you will get it for cheaper and lose less money when you re-sell since the strongest depreciation period has already past.

I agree with NYC totally, I have a 2002 and a 97SE I still get more compliments on the 97SE. The 97-99 SE's to me are still the best looking stock Maxima to date a yes a red SEL is tight, but black or Mahogony is great too.

The Crimson Blaze is a nice color but not something I could look at everyday. Put it this way, I would never buy one even if the price was right and it had all the options I wanted. Its just too RED for me, I'd much rather prefer the other unique 99 SEL color which kind of looks like Neptune blue but a different shade.
