1) Remove cat.
2) Look inside the outlet of the cat.
3) Note condition of flex section
4) Further action is dependant on 3)

You don't even have to remove the cat. Seperating the y-pipe from the cat (2 bolts) will allow you to bend down the y-pipe and look inside of the flex section. A flashlight will be helpful.

If I were to have a defective flex section, how soon after installing the pipe (mile wise) would I expect significant failure of that section?

Hard to say. It could happen the moment you turn on the motor in a newly installed flex to never.

I checked mine out today and it still looks good (see photo at link below). I have about 10K miles of somewhat aggressive miles on it. You can see that the welded rings holding the flex section at front and rear still seem to be holding. If I understand Cattman correctly, the flex section implodes when the weld on these rings fail.

you just had 8K miles on it in your other post today. How much is Cattman paying you?

I've had my y-pipe on for 15k miles and 6 months. It was used and I dont know how many miles Josh put on it, but my flex section is still perfect.

it was somewere between 8 and 10k miles ago...don't know for sure...didnt write down mileage when i put it on.

my guess would be that my pipe will fail eventually just like many others have. At least I know how it drives now and can use this as a benchmark for any performance problems down the road.
