How much should a timing belt replacement cost?

I have heard really expensive prices (like 5 hours labor)
Is that true?

the job done at a nissan dealer will likely cost you close to $600.
it DOES take about 5 hours of labor to do..
when I bought my car, I made them change it as part of the signing contract.. the nissan shop did mine in 3-4 hours with two guys working on it.

 

Mine cost about $120...FIND a buddy who can do it...Ive gotten really lucky, my step-dads father owns a mazda dealership about an hour away, so I get work done dirt cheap! I dont know what I'd do without em'

 

I just had it done at a very reputable dealer. It ran a bit over $400. The belt was about $25 rest labor.

Look over recent posts on the subject for other ideas. I changed the water pump, tensioner, frost plug, theromostat, radiator hoses, drive belts and coolant. Ran just parts more - same labor as just doing the belt.

 

I have recently acquired my 91 SE and the guy who sold it to me could not remember if he ever changed the damn belt.

I bought the car at 106K. I shopped around and could not find anyone cheaper than $400. The local Firestone place wanted $600!!!

Then, by luck, I found a Nissan factory trained mechanic who agreed to do it for $250 plus parts. The grand total came out to $398 because I had him replace the water pump and the 3 drive belts.

I insisted on using Nissan OEM parts but he used "Dayco" the belts (found in PeP Boys). He said they work fine.
For the water pump, he used a "Cardone" pump.

However, after this job was done, the car was idling a little rough (around 700 RPM). Especially when I put it in reverse. When I try to use the power windows (or put any sort of electrical load), the idle dips further down.

Does anyone know if this is a timing problem? I thought the timing was controlled by the computer.

 

I'd stick with <b>Nissan brand parts</b> above all when it comes to maintenece, personally on major things like a timing belt, messing up the timing belt can be a b*tch for your engine and definently your wallet!!

 

I needed a mechanic cuz I had a bad water pump and I figured that I might as well change the timing belt while I spending money. I tried goodyear and those motherf*$%^@s wanted $700, then I hit Firestone and they ended up wanting $670 so i went to my friendly local Nissan dealer and they changed my timing belt,my tensioner, and my water pump for $450 I couldn't belive that the dealer was the cheapest place in town and they washed my car while they had it for 4 hours.

 

Mine cost about $550 from local Nissan dealer, which included all belts, T-belt, tensioner water pump etc. I was surprised too to see that he did not tried to rob me. However, recently when I tried to get my exhaust studs replaced, he tried to charge me $2100. He said that I need both e-manifolds, y-pipe etc. I am still Pi**ed about it an complained to the service manager but nothing happened.

About the rough idle: I think you should check all vacuum hoses first. then I take it back to the guy and see what he says. Keep us posted so we know what was wrong with it.

I paid $360.06 at Northwest Nissan (Lynnwood, WA) back in April '97 to do the timing belt and the three other drive belts on my car. Labor was $259.60, timing belt was $30.96, and the other belts were $13.66 each and rest in taxes.
