Homelink problems explained

Hi, I just purchased a 2002 SE, only to find out I couldn't program the Homelink buttons to my garage. After trying several times, I started doing some research. Big suprise (not really) that others are also having similar problems. After calling a local retailer for my garage door opener, I found out the following. First, I have a Wayne-Dalton opener. This may or not be the same problem with other openers. Anywho, I was told the WD opener uses "rolling codes", but the number of "rolling codes" is higher than what the Homelink system supports. For instance, Homelink only supports 10,000 different codes, but my opener supports 50,000 different codes. Make sense? The good news (sort of) is WD makes a module that attaches to the opener which limits the codes to be compatible with the Homelink system. The bad news is the module cost $70!!! Although, I haven't tried it personally, the retailer assures me it will make the system compatible.

Hope this helps.

BTW, my numbers where used for illustration purposes only.

My other 2 cars have homelink, and I would have added it to the max, except my garage door opener "jumps" channels. By this I mean only the remote that came with it will open the device...it changes the channel everytime I open it, and the homelink will not do that. Its some kind of security thing, but I need to carry the full remote.

Homelink added "rolling code" technology in 1997 or 1998.
