Re: crap

Mine looked just like that (just on the front bank the rears were ok) and I could pull them up and hear them arcing. for temporary use I wraped them in a layer of electrical tape (tight fit so only room for one maybe two layers of tape) and then when I pulled them up I didnt hear the arcing so it fixed it. I would replace them though this is only a temporary fix to get you by until new ones come in.

is it necessary/recommeded to replace all six? i was only going to replace only the cracked ones (front three).

also awsm66: do you have to use some kind of special electric tape b/c of the heat?

I just used regular electrical tape...that is why I say temporary use because of the heat.

I just replaced the front 3 because the back were in perfect shape.

I guess you should replace all of them though.

sometimes I would have a speratic miss and it went away after I taped it and I didn't notice any improvenent over the tape and new coils (the problem was solved in other words but I didn't have a power increase)

is that for my post or for your question earlier.

I dont know how to check the coils without checking a manual...

if my last post was confusing.

I had some problems because of cracked coils...I taped the coils and the problem went away.

I replaced the coils shortly after I taped the coils and I didnt notice a diference from the taped coils to the new ones but again the problem was already cured with the taping of the coils.

Just like you guys I have crack coils, just as bad as the pics posted above. Just by looking at my coils you can see signs of arching. I too did the temporary repair with the electric tape, and all went well. I recently rebuild both my VTC's, larger 65mm TB, custom port match intake plenum and manifold and most important bump my ign timing up to 25 deg. I must say for a auto my off line improved greatly, maybe it's due to a combination of all the above work but I would have to think the bump timing had more to do with it. From the day I wrap my coils I knew someday I probably had to replace them, but if there is no performance difference between the wrap coils and new coils my money will be put to other mods

regular electrical tape will not insulate the high voltage comming out of the coil (regualr electrical tape ~600V, coil voltage ~~20,000V). It may prevent the arching to a degree, but it cannot 'fix' the coil in any way. Even mylar or kapton tape is not a fix for the coil. For someone to say that they did not see an increase in performance in shorted coils means that there is more that needs to be done to the car to tune it up.

My coils were not cracked at all, and they had 70k on them, and I saw a big difference in performance when I changed them.

Even if you did insulate the coil from jumping to ground, the coil is still shorting out INSIDE, where the windings are no longer able to create the high voltage b/c the number of turns in the coil is lessened due to the fact that it is shorting out at some point. So you might be getting a small spark barely enough to ingnite your gas mixture. My engine will pull all the way to redline even at part throttle (in power mode).
