I can understand chanign your suspension. But what is it about bigger rims that give you a harsher ride? is it the width?

Not only less air but less side wall means less rubber = Harder ride.

 

And all this time I thought it was because rims over 18" used pure rubber with no air

 

Less sidewall = STIFFER sidewall = Stiffer Ride...

i can ride on tires with no air with 20s. for like a week i didnt have any air in one of my tires and i didnt know until i was checking the pressure... and the ride difference isnt as dramatic as people act..

i believe, if I remeber correctly, in order to maintain the "similar" ride you would have to increase the width of the tire as much as the rim size....for example, if you get 19's, (lets say 3 inches over stock) then you would have to increase the width by 3 inches to compensate. however in many cases this is unrealistic, and you would rub against the wheel well. so you might end up only getting 1-1.5 inches wider if your lucky. this is all conjecture so dont quote me on this.
