2k2 shift ****

I hate starting threads but I gotta know...

Does anyone else hate the shift **** on the 2k2 6spd? I like the look but mine turns all the time, every time I shift hard it twists loose and I flip out. I want to change it out for something like the Big Momo, but I don't want to interfere with the "Reverse lift lever". Anyone else install something that actually works? Preferably something that screws on.

Thanks

I've had no problems with mine coming loose while shifting. I think it looks decent and has a good feel.

Just for those that have the need. Amazing what people will sell on ebay.

Where can i find a side view pic of the 2k2 ****. I'm interested in a leather one with some aluminum. If it's short, and if it will fit my 2k1, i'd trade with ya. I have a Momo, and the pic is on my page.
peace

Is your **** round or oblong? I am looking for one like the GTI shifter. The big round one with the lether on top and metal on bottom. Does anyone know if the threads on the Honda stick and on the Max stick are the same? I found a sweet Titanium 6spd **** for a NSX, just need to see if it will even fit. It is a screw on too.

I dont' know, but mine is kind of round, and the piece with the screws on the bottom where you tighten the momo **** is metal.

Here is what I want to put on. Hopefully it will fit. I took my **** off and tried to put it onto a civc shifter. It started to work, but the honda pot gets wider as you go, where as ours stays the same width, I am thinking it will work. Hoping so.

Wouldn't bother you that it has the gate pattern for the 6-spd on the alumiplastic center stripe on the ****?

I like the thing...but my plastic thing moves when I shift. I hate that.

well I am thinking about the JDM **** I have shown. I am going to pick it up and if it works great, if not, then I will sell it to some shop around here. There are a ton of Honda guys here that would put that on there car even though they don't have the 6spd. Or even for the RSX guys.

Mine is loose and it ticks me off. You can change the **** without any problems though. Just unthread it off the top. It's simple. I'm going to try putting some Lock-tite on the thread for mine and see if that helps any. I've taken it apart (as much as I could) and I don't really think that there's anyway for the dealer to "fix" it unless they have something like Lock-tite, or they can glue it in position. The inside where the threads are does not rotate inside the ****.

Just to let you know... if you want that shift **** to fit your civic. Just figure out the size of hole and the thread percentage that you want and take it to any local machine shop. They can drill and tap a new hole in that shift **** for you. I work for a company that sells tapping arms and that's what we specialize in. You could even send it to me and I'd tap it for free. www.flexarminc.com

P.S. If you can remove the shifter off the Honda you can always "turn down" the shank of shifter and then externally tap the shifter to fit the shift ****.

Stereodude - yeah I know that you just have to unscrew it, that is why I would like another unit that can screw right on, so I dont have to mess with the sink screws and adapters from other kinds.

Condor - no, I am trying to put that peice in the picture on my Max. It is made for/and fits Hondas. It looks like the Honda Shifter is the same size at the initial thread but gets larger as it comes down.

I am not trying to make this a huge project. I just want something that is simple and stable to put into my hand. I like the stock unit, but it sucks, it is made from plastic and doesnt stay tight. I wish they would some out with a real shift ****. Maybe with the NISMO stuff they will, but I doubt it.

Still if that honda **** doesn't fit on your max... You can (or anyone can) easily machine (drill and tap) the hole to fit your maxima shifter. All you'd need to do is measure the max shifter and drill and tap the shift **** to that size. Because I have every conceivable piece of equipment to drill and tap, it would be very easy for me to do. Easy for any machine shop to do very quickly (like 5 mins), probably for free. SO, hopefully you can just make it fit w/out this. However, if it doesn't don't give up on your idea, just get this thing tapped to the correct size. Good luck! Nice looking shift **** btw!

I know this sounds stupid...but on my Probe the handle was loose as everyone is describing. I took a strip or two of duct tape around all the threads and then rethreaded the ****. Worked like a champ and nothing messy to deal with. I thought about thread lock but did not want to risk making a goopy mess as I am a clutz.

BTW I tried electrical tape first but in the heat it got to gooey and sliped and started to twist again.

Good call. Duct tape comes through again. Best invention ever!

I did kind of the same thing, but instead used plumbers teflon tape which is specifically used for threads. Since it is very thin, it is easy to adjust how tight the shift **** will be.

I am in the process of picking that one up right now. I am switching over man, hold me back! IMO the round one is easier to deal with, the grip is the same no matter how you grab or shift. Plus it is pretty snazzy

So I tightened the **** down real tight, I mean I ranked on it. I turned it prolly 1 or 2 more times than it was when I got it. It is nice and solid now. I may stick with the stock one, but I think that Titanium shifter would look real good on there Only thing is that Titanium will run me about $70 to get.

Dude,

My shift **** was loose as well. During hard shifting the **** would spin in my hand and mess me all up. I just forced it around one more revolution and the thing has not moved ever since. It was a little difficult to do but not that bad.

That's funny, I also had the Probe GT before the Max. The oem leather **** just started to peel as it had 125k miles, so I had to change it.

That is sweet that you have one. I would use some duct tape or something. Get that thing on there!

Worste case take it to a machine shop.

I didn't really see this issue addressed yet in this thread. When you change the shift ****, how does that affect the "reverse lift lever." Is it a separate piece from the shift ****, and will stay on the thread when you change the ****?

I had this problem with mine too. Just give it one full turn clockwise, to tighten, and your problem will be solved!

I deal with helicoils. That may be a very good solution. Find a way to measure the stick and the hole in the ****. You might be able to just use any regular insert from a hardware store.

Yes the lift lever is separate from the ****. The **** will turn and the lever (a little round disc that you pull up with two fingers to go into Rev.) will stay on. The issue is there is not a lot of room on top of the shifter like most sticks, due to the lever being there. To make it more difficult you cannot install a **** that goes onto the stick too far as well because the lever has to be able to lift up & down to operate.
