2000 I30t vs. 1999 Grand Prix GTP

My friend that I work with just got his GTP saturday. So at lunch we had to see how well they got along. I have a PR intake on my I30 and he hasn't got to touch his yet. So I wasn't sure how it would turn out.

I was stopped at the light when he slowly came rolling by just as the green light turned. I punched it about when his back bumper passed me. I pulled up as far as his front tire and his back bumper never passed my front bumper. It was pretty fun. Both of us were shifting at different times. Inching forward on each other wondering who was going to come out on top. But when we hit about 70 he slowly started to pull away. I started to slow it down about 80. Cause work was getting close. Just wondering, should I turn the O/D back on when I hit a certain MPH?

It was my first run with someone. I had a blast and so did he.

dude im sorry to say this but try to race him from a dead stop ull be surpized at how fast those things get up and go off the line. the Hp those things have isnt something to be worried about its the torque they produce 280ft.lbs w/240hp. off the line the auto max/i30 sucks 0-20mph is slow, but 20-40 it just goes. if u maunal shift, i kinda do in a way, i just leave the car in gear longer so it will shift at redline or it will just shift at arond 6100rpm. but id just leave the OD off the whole time, unless ur gonna run third gear to redline (120mph) the once u pass 100 turn the o/d off otherwise 4th gear is basically dead. but try racing him from a dead stop see what happens. stop at 80though its basically pointless after that because what he doesnt know is the that GTP cant run faster then 108mph. have fun and be carfule dude. peace

actually come to think of it, ur 0-20 cant be all that bad since u got traction control, my tires just spin for a few seconds. so u got a better chance then i though.

Traction Control will mess up the launch VERY badly, turn it off. Keep the OD off till it redlines in 3rd gear!!! Manually shift.

Kinda O/T

but after he beats you have him go for a ride in your car and he will quickly realise how much nicer yours is compared to his plastic GM.

oh no doubt about that, those grand prix intriors are $hit. especially when compared to an i30, there is no comparison at all.

Are you saying I should manual shift with an automatic? Does it hurt the transmission any? I've always been weary of doing that.

manually shifting an auto tranny, is a bad thing. in my old max i blew out 2 trannies because i didnt allow the tranny to shift at regular point. the way i do it now it this, when i normally drive i leave it alone, but if i give it the gas it will shift by itself at around 6100rpm. the redline is at 6600rpm though, and those extra 500rpms do help. so basically i just leave it in its geat a bit longer just to allow it to hit red line, then i just pop it into the next gear. i have had no problem doin this whatsoever. if i do have any its ok i have a warranty.

Next time you race you should make sure you have even starts. If your going to have a rolling start, both of you should roll at the same speed. If your going from a dead stop, you both should stop completely. The outcome should be different especially if you powershift...

if he start from a dead stop, the GTP will eat him alive. off the line torque in those things are crazy. i dont think a 2k2 could take them right off the line. they have really good low end power. but ive raced one from a 25mph roll, made him eat ****. from a roll i can really get moving its just startin off at a good speed in the auto that makes the diff, if we started at 30 i would have started at 3k rpms in 2nd gear and gotten roasted. thats the thing that sucks about the auto.

I've beaten several of those GTPs ever since I got my 2K2. Unless they're running an SLP-type setup (http://www.grandprix.net/limited/gtx_article.html, they'll get beat the 2K2 Max and maybe run even with the Y2K 5sp.

btw is urs 6spd or auto. yea ive beat a few of those as well. the thing that troubles me with these are their first gears. right off the line they take off and build up a momemtum and slowly die off after that. im flyin by them by the time 80mph comes around. mins a 2k1 auto so i dont really have much fun compared to the 5spd, but mines just as fast as a 5spd. i run very very low 15's. even if i go up against a 2k2 im right up their, if not slightly ahead, depends on the driver, but the 6spds take me by about a 1 1/4 car lead by the time 80 comes around. ill admit whem im beat.
