noise in back of my car...what should i check?

I've been having this noise in the back of my car...sounds like metal hitting metal...but it only happens when i go over certain bumps..then the sound continues even if i'm on smooth road again, but
the sound then goes away couple minutes after i'm on smooth road again. i've been having this problem for months now....i went under my car thinking that it's the exhaust shaking and hitting something, but when i shook the exhaust, it didn't really make any noise. i checked if my wheels were on tightly, and they're fine. The noise gets really loud, sounds like somehing's gonna fall off the car.

what should i look at?
my car is pretty much stock except that i have 17s
any help would be appreciated.
thanks

That's a pretty general description. Does it sound like it's coming from the rear part of the passenger cabin? From the trunk area? Or from the rear wheels/suspension/brakes area?

If you want a closer listen to help determine, you can always have someone roll around while you're cramped in the trunk. This helped me sort out two rattles and a weatherstripping issue last week

well it sounds like in the rear near the wheel and the exhaust
which are what i checkked already and they seem to be fine.
so it's right around that area....i dont think it's coming
from the trunk...under the trunk area

sorryif it's a general description but i dont really know how to describe it

Rear brake anti rattle clips might be getting lose. The noise would then be your brake caliper and pads rattling.

Once you hear the noise, step lightly on the brakes and see if it immediately goes away. If it does, you've found your problem.

not license plate...it's really loud, but i think if there's someone that's around 130lbs sitting in the backseat than there's little to no noise...cus when my lil bro sits back there i dont hear it

Well, I had the similar problem with my previous Max, and source of it was in my rear hubs. So, I suggest you to check them out at near by service station and get them replaced if it a cause of your problem. Good luck...

Remove the rear seat and check that huge slab of sheetmetal thats bolted to the rear with 10 or so 10 mm bolts. It coulda worked loose. It would explain why if someobody sits in the rear seat the sound goes away.

wow...what a large number of varying answers LOL. First I'd check the obvious, like Eric suggested, because you don't have to pay for that. Then I'd check the shocks in the rear; if a bump-stop is now not working properly (blown shock), you will hear clanking (you'll have to take out the trunk side-lining pieces for this).

If none of that reveals anything, take off the rear wheels and check for loose bolts/parts; also check your exhaust hangers.

Funny, I've been getting the same thing. Sounds like something rattling around in the back of my trunk. I have a speaker box back there, but I know that's not bouncing around. I'm thinking rear bump stops. What's that thing under the car that needs tightening sometimes? The rear beam? I can't remember. I remember someone saying awhile back what it was....anyways, it's getting pretty annoying.

Make sure the stock jack is firmly in place. You need to jack it up a little to get it snug...
