Auto transmission in 2002 Maxima SE
I just got a 02 Maxima SE on Sunday and was wondering about the automatic transmission. Right around the points where it should be shifting (usually around 40 mph and 60 mph) if I let go of the gas and a little later (10 secs, 30 secs whatever) press again it gives me a little jerk, like its hesitiating or something. I took it back to the dealer and had one of their service guys ride with me and he says its normal and its the transmission going in/out of a coast brake (?) and since its near the shift points it has to figure out what gear to put it in.
So, I guess what I'm wondering is, does anyone else have this happen? (aka is it really normal or was the guy just telling me that so I'd go home?)
Thanks,
bobcat

I haven't actually experienced this either. If anything it's the hesitation that bugs me.
The only "jerk" i experience is when it downshifts, pulls you away and presses you back on the seat

i had that problem once going up a hill, i pressed it down, it like bogged down, so i pressed it again, and it jerked then went fine. but this is when it has maybe 500 miles on it. im used to the hesitation now.
nope drive by wire unless i am a dummy i hope not

If I remember right, isn't the 2002 not drive by wire, but electronic throttle control? I remember discussing this before.

Actually the accelerator pedal was not difficult, but remove the pedal from the shaft because it is made for the cable actuated gas pedal, not the electronic throttle.
(from a thread on replacing 2K2 pedals with 2K1 AE pedals)
you are correct though. My bad, I just looked it up. It's drive by wire, which is electronic throttle control. Not cable driven. I'm an idiot. Actually just woke up too early to take the Max in for the recall. See here http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?threadid=131534

hey
I have the same ittle jerk and hesistation around 40 I thought there was something wrong with it but I guess its normal. It ****es me off though when I go down on the peda;l and it hesitates between 40-60 I dont get why it does that if it is at 60 it just starts flying when you hit the pedal
Re: hey
It's not downshifting isn't it?
At 40-60 it may downshift from 4th to 3rd or 2nd depending on your speed. Anything over 60 it only has 3rd gear to d/s to.

I get that same jerking motion between 40-60 and its really annoying cuz it seems like its downshifting but it's not. It kinda feels like youre hitting a bump.
