Does anyone know if the Cattman catback is Mandrel bent?
reason i'm skeptical is because of how cheap Cattman is selling them for. Normally all other competition GReddy and Apexi are mandrel bent but close to 500$ .. while the Cattman is stainless steel and only 325$ or so.. which is a lot cheaper. But my friend got a custom catback on his max and it is not mandrel bent but cost a lot less than the shop would charge for one that is..

This might be more info than you guys need, but here is something that Brian sent me awhile ago when I asked him about his system...
Hi Luke,
Sorry for the slow response, things have been busy. I'm trying to catch up through a mountain of email, and I think perhaps some stock information I've prepared for the new Cattman Catback will answer most of what you ask and just about all that I can answer. As you can see from the accompanying text, we used the GReddy exhaust as the market benchmark for designing our system and improved on all of its shortcomings.
The resonator doesn't significantly affect performance (keeping in mind that we're only talking about a maximum power increase of maybe 8hp and fractions thereof) if its not a low tech design with raised louvers facing the exhaust stream. Our design uses the micro-perforated interior tubing. The "Y-pipe compatible" characteristics involve an over-length and diameter resonator in the mid-pipe, high tech acoustical materials, and some other design considerations that we don't disclose -- you're right tubing is tubing, but that's not the key.
The catback information:
Cattman Cat-back Exhausts for the 2000-2002 Maxima and I30 are now in stock and ready to ship. Price is $350 for the muffler/rear section and $250 for the mid-pipe and $600 for the full system. Both are interchangeable with the stock pieces and bolt on just as they do using the same hanger links. All stainless steel TIG-welded components, 2.5" ID mandrel bent tubing throughout, polished oversize resonator and twin-tip muffler, reinforced hangers, and precision fabrication for the best possible fit. I30 installation may require adjustment of tip length. Complete installation kit available.
When used with a stock Y-pipe, Cattman Catbacks are slightly louder than stock exhausts and the quality of tone is greatly improved, from very quiet at idle to a soft growl under acceleration. Installing an aftermarket Y-pipe with the Cattman Catback deepens the tone to an assertive pitch without transitioning to the harsh, loud sound common to other aftermarket catback exhausts.
Many have been disappointed with the change of tone and volume that occurs when they add an aftermarket Y-pipe to their aftermarket exhausts, because none of the available brands include the design features that we do. As a result, the exhaust note becomes harsh and quite loud unless suppressed with an overly restrictive, large muffler, which can really limit any performance benefit. The Cattman resonator and muffler are a straight-through design with micro-perforated interior tubing and advanced sound deadening materials for the maximum amount of power, minimum amount of sound and the best tonal qualities.
I've been asked to compare the new Cattman catback with the GReddy and other brands of exhaust. In my opinion the GReddy has been the best exhaust system available for the Maxima up to now, but we developed a more advanced product in several key areas. The GReddy system is not TIG-welded, all the tubing and the mid-pipe resonators are mild steel (lacking the corrosion resistance and thermal containment properties of stainless), and they are a poor acoustical match for an aftermarket Y-pipe. The Cattman and GReddy exhausts are comparably priced -- compare the features, you be the judge.
Hope this information is useful, and I'll add that I've gotten favorable comments back from almost every mechanic that has installed these -- they love 'em cause they go in so well.
