36-1 Trigger Wheel installation under way..

Mounting a 6 1/2" 36-1 trigger wheel on a OEM 99 crank pulley. MegaSquirt time !! Got the cam sensor figured out, parts on order.

The OEM crank bolt is a M16x1.5 bolt. I have one of the same that is 140mm long, for testing. Have more bolts - 100mm, 110mm, 120mm, on order. I used a 5/8" drill bit to drill out the center hole since the 5/8" is almost exactly the right size. 16mm drill bits aren't common here, it seems.

6-1/2" 3/16" thick trigger wheel w/16mm hole in the middle makes for a simple mount.

No - won't have to, I think. I need more pix, but with the right bolt (100mm)and a couple of flat M16 washers, the wheel centers up on the bolt and the bolt can be torqued down and use the 3/16" steel plate to hold everything together. I have five M8 1.25 hex allen screws to use to keep the alignment perfect once determined (probably will use four). I got the Cherry Hall sensors in the mail today, so I need to make an adjustable mount but that's just work. The trigger wheel comes from England, and it's a perfect fit on the Maxima pulley.

Maybe this really can be a bolt-on for a stock pulley.. we'll see. My car goes in the shop next week so after the drive train is extracted I can tear down the engine.

Hope everything's alright!

Look forward to seeing the car on megasquirt. It's going to come alive!

Well, I wound up in the ER last night -seems that the last antibiotic didn't work. I'll be down for another 2 weeks - with luck. Dammit.. I put the engine project on hold until I get better, and enough strength to crack head bolts.

Looking forward to the MegaSquirt project - with a correct trigger wheel and cam sensor, I can do this.

Harold,
Very sorry to hear that you are not feeling well. Here's hoping that you can get back to feeling better soon. Your health is the priority. ... The Shark will still be there waiting for you.

It looks like I won't be able to return to work until the first week of Nov., so I'm going to make arrangements to return the Shark to my home. It can sit in the driveway until spring and then I'll pick up where I left off. So be it...

Heh - I'm still under some medical restrictions for another month, so no honey mead for a while. It's going to take several months in the gym to get back into some kind of shape (I've lost about 20lbs), so after talking to my shop guy, I'm taking the car back before May to get the engine and transmission yanked. Then, back to work on the engine. The car is now back in the driveway.

Seriously, recovery is gonna take a few months. Then maybe I can start up again in April, getting the engine and tranny pulled so I can open the engine up.

Nice to hear from you again - how's California weather these days?

Hey ! - a blast from the past... how have you been? I've had two or three major surgeries over the last two months, and am still on medical recovery leave and will be until mid-November - I hope. For all you youngsters, have your doctor check your prostrate on a regular basis. Really.... Pissing pints of blood , with chunkies, is way more exciting than burning off DRs at over 100MPH on the highways.

I'm getting better every day but it will still be early spring before I can get back to the Shark. But I will - way too much fun!

Glad you are getting better. Iv been around just not posting much, I mingle with the maxima guys on the facebook groups instead.

I did however run a PB, check out the 1/4 section for the post and video. Did 11.4 at 122mph, slipping 4th gear, and 1.9 60'

Back to work tomorrow !

I got the back-to-work clearance papers from my doctor on Wednesday, so after getting clearance from the FMLA company, I'm going to drop into work tomorrow. Been a while - 8 weeks - and I really miss hospital cafeteria food.

There's some gym time in my future over this winter - not much going on outdoors, what with the Polar Vortex sitting on most of the country and freezing everything.

Glad you noticed that .. with the M8 setscrews and tempered lockwasher, it will be locked in position, but the wheel can be installed or removed easily - I hope. I have a much simpler way to add a cam sensor to the 3.5s which allows full incremental and sequental ignition and injector control. But, I can't finish any of this until early spring, looks like. The MS3 Pro is a kick-azz ECU from the specs and number of racers starting to use it.

Just reading over some old posts and came across one of your comments.
Made me miss seeing you around.
How's everything going?
Make any progress on the one or two warm days we've had here?

Hope all is well.

I'm back !!

I've been laid up with medical issues for quite a while - prostrate cancer, abdominal surgery, post-op infections, retiring from work the last day of Feb, but I'm up and mobile again, so I will try to start getting the hurt engine out to see what repairs are required.

The weather is much better now, so I can tear down the engine in my garage and not freeze my fingers.

Thanks - it's been "interesting" just getting back on my feet - literally. 39 daily radiation treatments really burned out some of my innards - I had a hard time walking after about 1/3 of them. It's been rough on an old guy (71) like me...

For all you youngsters out there - if you're over 40 get annual physicals and include a PSA test. Normal is around 1 and when mine jumped from 2 to 3 in two weeks, I got several scans and a biopsy and a grade-8 cancer showed up in my most favorite part of my anatomy... well, life got complicated afer that, with four months of hormone therapy and then Wrath of Thor radiation treatments. The cancer went away completely, but oh Jeeze the side effects.

Since I'm going to tear down my engine anyway, I'm thinking about turbo instead of nitrous, but since I've never built a turboed engine, I'm open for opinions. New 8.8:1 CP pistons and the Megasquirt MP3-Pro ecu and a 88mm intake turbo should help burn me some E85, right? Maybe 3 barr of boost?

Welcome back ya "old fart" lol Glad to hear your doing better these days. I'm in agreement with you on the prostate exams and PSA testing beginning at age 40. My father had prostate cancer about 15 years ago and thankfully surgery remedied the situation. I'm now in my late 40 ' and have been getting checked out every year since I was 35.
It's a great relief to know how well your prognosis is.
As far as your plans to go boosted.... I have zero experience or suggestions for you, but I am sure you will research everything beforehand. As far as getting it all sorted out.... I have the utmost confidence that you will be successful.
Welcome back Harold, we've missed you.

-Andy

Thanks for the "welcome-back" from you guys (and Fakie, too) - so when I announced my retirement plans and people asked what I was gonna do, I said "I'm going racing!". I always wanted to show up at Yellobelly near Dallas, 'cause that's a real outlaw 1/8 mile track. Wonder if I could make a few side bets with my FWD 4-door there??

Going fishing with the maxima, you would make a killing. I am too paranoid about gambling so I dont do it, but I am pretty sure we could make a good chunk of change just because most people take maxima as a joke.

I'm back - once again

Turns out I wasn't as healthy as I thought I was. But now I've got some of my strength back, and have started planning for projects for the Land Shark. I have ordered a balanced Brian Crower 4.07L stroker kit (forged crank, CP forged pistons (96.0mm) with top and skirt coatings and nitrous rings and heavy-duty wrist pins, Carrillo H-beam rods) for the present 3.5, have made some progress tonight with a 36-1 timing wheel that appears to be pretty simple to install over the factory crank pulley, and still plan to try a MegaSquirt MS3-PRO ecu for ignition and injector timing initially. Cams are a possibility (Jim Wolfe C8, C9, or C10) but need to talk that over with that shop. Still need to pull the engine to assess damage to the right-side Cosworth head (exhaust valve).

Once I finish tapping all six holes for the set screws I'll photograph the installed wheel and Cherry gear-tooth sensor. Wheee...

Got the trigger wheel completed and test-mounted last night, and took some photos today, so I can show the details. There are some things to explain, first.

1. The OEM crank bolt is a M16x1.5. I used a grade 8.8 bolt, M16x1.5x100mm to replace it. I drilled out the center hole of the 1/8" thick 6 3/4" 36-1 trigger wheel with a new 5/8" drill - because 5/8" is an exact fit for the M16 bolt - beats trying to locate a 16mm drill bit.

2. I used a hardened-steel washer and the same type of lock washer. The six allen screws are M8x1.25x10mm, drilled and tapped with an Irwin bit and tap set. The allen screws are inverted cone, to bite into the steel of the pulley.
