Replacing rear brakes question

I have a 2016 Maxima SR with 72,000 miles. The dealer told me at my last oil change it was time for rear brakes. He quoted me $220 for the brakes, $114 for the brake fluid and $95 for the brake filter ... $429 total and he'd give me 10% off because I about fell over after hearing the cost.

Is this high for replacing rear brakes?
Could I only do the brake pads and have the rotors turned?
Do I need the fluid and the filter replaced?

Thanks!

I had my rear brakes done on my 2014 maxima, rear rotors, new pads, and shop fees, etc....out the door for $236 - done locally not at a dealer.

Do it yourself, it's not that hard. There are a lot of YouTube videos available with step by step directions. You will save a lot of money and you will have some quality time with your car.

However if you decide to have it done then I would get a second opinion. I changed the pads on my '09 Maxima (over 100k miles) about a year before trading it in and there was still sufficient material left on the pads. I had the pads when I checked the condition and went ahead and changed them but in retrospect I should have just returned the pads and got my money back.

I just ordered my powerstop brake kit w/drilled and slotted rotors off Advanced Auto with a 30% off coupon code, 292 plus shipping. I will be doing the job/painting my calipers red myself. Will post photos when done.

They are ripping you off. Firestone I had front and rear pads replaced, rotors turned, $300. I forgot to ask the cost of the fluid change, probably around $89 without a coupon. So out the door front and rears with fluid swap would run under $400 easy. That was for a cadenza, I'm sure the max would run the same price. And what's this filter? This something new?

Something to note about the fluid, it doesn't need to be replaced at 70k most likely. It's based purely on age and Ph scale test. So a 2 year old car will likely still have plenty of life left in the fluid. Again, not sure why he would try to rip you off with this. For that process, they essentially flush all the fluid out of the system and lines, to get your fluid compression back to original. If there's water, contamination, or breakdown, the compression gets out of hand, making it a bit harder to stop sometimes. Again, 2016, 2 years old I think you are fine.

Normally Firestone is my go to. Not in this case they quoted me 760 all in for the Max and that was with a military discount. Which drove me to order and install the brakes myself.

My thoughts exactly and that was just OEM spec. I'm all for paying for convienence but I couldn't justify spending an additional $500+, knowing I have the skills to do the job myself.

My apologies that was for new rotors, was never a big fan of turning. You quote of 400 or close too might hold true, I never even thought to ask bought the turnt rotors.

But always good to give as much input/experience as possible, which is why I love this forum!

I will post some pics when job is done...

Good luck in whatever decision you make!

The Service and Maintenance Guide calls for it to be replaced every 20k miles, and never calls for a test.

Interesting, I just read where VW and Mercedes recommend 20k or 2 years. I've never driven one of those, and with the previous Max, was never told at the dealership that I should, and I was there often for warrantee work. I just did it at about the 4-5 year mark at FS knowing it was likely due. It's funny how with some of these cars they shorten the life of the Brake fluid, but push out the life of the Motor oil change.

Yes the 20 K brake fluid change is called for on the maint schedule and covered under the prepaid plans. In many cars this is an often overlooked item and due to the way most brake fluids attract moisture. It is a good idea unless you have DOT 5 fluid which is synthetic and less prone to the moisture assimilation. I'd almost do this every 2 years even if you have a low mileage less than 20 K on the odo.

I just bought Brakes and rotors for the rear on my Altima from Rock.....Under 50 bucks with shipping. I have had great luck with their brakes and rotors over the years...their cheap ones last longer than Nissan OEM. I have had no luck at all with OEM rotors and brakes from Nissan

Thanks for this info. I'm already on record as favoring new rotors over getting the original ones turned. At these prices, it confirms the logic in going with the new rotors. On a good day I would never rate the Maxima's braking as outstanding - mostly very good. Motor week commented on this in their 2016 road test that the stopping distance was an above average 125 ft from 60 mph.
Good tires and in-spec brakes are a must!

For me, there is a high degree of satisfaction doing it myself and saving tons of cash. Also, it is comforting to me to know it was done right, pins cleaned and re-lubed with the right stuff, new hardware...correct torque specs etc.

Agreed, if you can do it yourself will save you lots of $$$ and is easy to do if you have the right tools and some free time.
