After numerous tries of convicing my dealer that my car is slipping from 1st to 2nd, they "finally" realized that there is a problem with my car. I went to the dealer today and made them to send a technician to test drive the car with me. I was kinda lucky that the slip was really bad when the technician was driving my car. The slippage lasted for a whole 2 seconds before it shifts into second chirpping the tires. Then..a COP pulled out of an intersection!!! Luckily, the cop wasn't after my car because my car wasn't going that much over the speed limit. The service manager got nothing to say except that "We are going to look into this problem." He said it may not be related to the TSB which I seriously doubt. But I don't really care as long as the fix the problem.

By the way, if you happen to live in Vancouver, BC, try to avoid "Richmond Nissan". The sales people know nothing and the service is terrible (tho the price is low, $188 Cdn for life-time oil & filter change, up to 4 times per year).

And thanks for the guys who posted the TSB for the slippage. It really helped. Thanks guys.

Congrats! I hope your's doesn't need a whole new transmission like mine did. Don't settle until you feel the issue is gone. It took me 5 tries... then I needed a new tranny... ugh.

Thanks. Could it be that serious that the whole transmission is needed to be replaced? Mine is really bad considering it slipping everytime when it's over 4k rpm from 1st to 2nd. Also, mine kinda delays when shifting from 2nd to 1st too. And the slippage was there since 99 winter. Hope it's not going to be that bad.
I will definately make sure the issue is gone..or else they are going to see me every week bugging them!

It could be that bad.. they better check your transmission oil pan for metal shavings.

CONGRATS

Hello. Very happy to hear you finally got the technician to experience the problem. I'm actually taking my car in this week to get the solenoid kit installed. It took over a month to get those parts in. But the parts are in and they're going to put it in so I'm real happy. So which Nissan dealership did you end up going to?

Re: CONGRATS

I went to Richmond Nissan to get it done. I am very lucky because they said the parts will arrive on tuesday and I'll have my car back before they close on tuesday. I am not sure are they going to change the solenoid because my dad answered the phone and they said they're going to change a coil or something. So I assume it's the solenoid. I'll know tomorrow at around 4 or so. Hope the slippage is really going away. (Had it for more then 1 year)

5thGen, did the slippage came back on your car after the initial TCM replacement?

UPDATE!!!

I just got back from my dealer today and they said that they don't have the TCM in stock and no Canadian dealers has it in stock right now. They said they have to order it all the way from Japan so I may have to wait for quite a while. They have the solenoid though.

Anyways, they just kept my car for two days without doing anything to it!!.. actually, they washed my car! But that's all they did.

Anybody know about how long I'll need to wait?

The dealer has my car in for the same problem also. The parts are on back order and they have no clue when they are going to come in. They kept the car and gave me a rental for the mean time. I really hope the parts come in a reasonable amount of time. I miss the max already

INSTALLED

Hi littledog. The slippage was gone with the TCM replacement, but the shifting/acceleration was really "mushy". I actually preferred the car the way it was before. But I figured it's better in the longrun for the transmission and left it at that. Then I found out about the Solenoid kit...

Anyway, I just got the car back today and it shifts much better now. Doesn't matter what gear I'm in, I press the gas and away I go. According to the work order, this is what they replaced:

DESCRIPTION: CHECK TRANS FOR SHIFTING ERRATIC 1ST TO 2ND SHIFT.
CAUSE: AS PER BULLETIN # NTSB00-066A

JC60A1 SOLENOID AUTO TRANSAXLE, RE&RE.
104 WPN
1 31940-85X04 @SOLENOID ASSY-
1 31036-3Y160 CONTROL UNIT
21 31377-80X09 BOLT
1 31397-80X01 GASKET
1 11026-01M02 WASHER
7 LOCAL-ATFLD @TRANS. FLUID

It looks like they replaced my ECU again. Either they didn't know they had already replaced it previously (4 months ago) or it was included in the kit and they installed everything without checking. Anyway, the kit was ordered Feb 1st so it took about a month and a half to arrive. But everything works great now and I'm a HAPPY HAPPY guy. Hope this helps.

The 160 model TCM is the newer one that goes along with the new solenoids.....The previous one was numbered 101 or something and the one before was 100

Re: Re: INSTALLED

My old one was the 160 model TCM. So they basically swapped out the TCM for an exact same model TCM. So I figure they did forget or just decided to install everything. Either way, it's done and I hope there's no more TSB regarding the transmission. Best of luck to all of you!

To those of you, who have replaced the TCM...was the slippage really bad and obvious to you??? I'm not such a aggressive driver esp. w/ an auto, but I don't think I can honestly say that I have the "slippage." Is it really worth it to replace the TCM?

UMD_MaxSE, I get my car serviced at Rosenthal also since that's where I bought it...Let me know how your new tranny feels when you get it back. Thanks!

Mine slipped occasionally. It was more noticeable when the engine was cold or the engine was under load, like when going up a hill. It's one of those things that is tough to reproduce sometimes, but you can tell if it happens. I will let you know how it feels tomorrow can't wait

I haven't replaced the TCM yet, but the slippage is really bad when you mash the pedal to get onto a freeway. Also like previous posts have mentioned when cold or under load. I'm thinking I'll park the Max near the dealer the night before I would bring it in so that the tranny would be cold and the slippage would be obvious to the service guys.

My dealer ordered the parts on Tuesday morning and they got the parts in Thursday afternoon. The service manager said he really had no idea when they would come in. He said anywhere from 2 days to a week or so. I guess I was pretty lucky to get them in soon. I get my car back this afternoon

UPDATE

I just got my solenoid installed yesterday (not the new TCM). The dealer said the new TCM is not required as long as there's no slippage. Well, after the solenoid install, there's no slippage. BUT, I think it shifts a little bit rough from 1st to 2nd now (car jerks a little bit). I don't know it's just me that got used to the real soft shifts or it's really a bit rough. Would the new TCM help to eliminate the jerkiness? I would doubt they will give me the new TCM though. They might just say your car is normal and try to get away with it.

So..any thought on how I should deal with the problem?

Thanks

I would not worry about the quick shifts like that. They are actually better for the tranny than soft, mushy shifts. The difference with the new solenoids is really noticeable compared to the old ones. Especially when you give it greater than half throttle

Thanks UMD. I guess I would live with it since I don't drive the car often (dad does).

Would the max with new TCM and solenoid be quicker than the ones without it? I think it does because it requires less time to shift. What do you guys think?

I went to another dealer this week, after being told once that the problem could not be duplicated. I thought a different dealer would see otherwise.

This dealership actually spent quite a bit of time checking things out, hooking up computers, etc. They looked at it for 2 hours. I provided the TSB upon arrival. They eventually said there wasn't a problem since no codes were generated.

I can do nothing but go on what they say. I will say I had more confidence in their words than the first dealership I went to, which, quite frankly, sucked.

I have always had the 101 model TCM and not the oldest one, so I don't really know what the differences are. For that matter, I don't know how the 101 and the latest model are different either....my TCM was never replaced

New solenoid, VB, torque converter, tranny cooler and you might be good to go!

Are you going to take your car in for the new solenoid? I hope they don't notice that your VB has been recalibrated

If you think about it though, the problem with the old solenoids was that they probably didn't provide enough line pressure and caused the tranny to slip. If you have the VB, you would be building up enough line pressure even if the solenoids did not. That tranny cooler will come in handy if you get new solenoids with your VB mod.....

I have everything mentioned except for the TC.

Since Jane97SE and Turbo95Max were afraid they would swap the VB, Jane ordered the new solenoid from Courtesy Nissan.

While the VB will be out, I want to "recalibrate" it some more for a firmer shift.
