Who else has killed their tranny

Has anyone else smoked their 5spd? Besides a tranny cooler, what else can I do to prevent this from happening again? (Beside not driving over 120mph) My car is currently at the dealer.
I'm trying to have the dealer install a ACT clutch since they have the tranny out, but they aren't play ball.

Wow, so you blew your tranny WITHOUT an ACT? Stock clutch? That's pretty rare. What exactly did you do to blow it? And if you don't mind me asking, what gear did you blow?

And I've always wondered...do you own any Fords?

I wouldn't lower my standards to drive a Ford.

I raced a late 80's 5.0 up hwy50. I hit 120mph and tried to go in to 5th. It wouldn't go in. I was finally able to get it in to 5th gear but all I heard was grinding...no power. I put in back in to 4th gear and drove a little bit further. When I had to down shift, I couldn't get it in to gear. The stick was frozen. I pulled off the road less than a 1/4 mile from a Nissan dealership.
The dealer hasn't called me with the exact problem, but they are pretty sure that the tranny is damaged.
By the way... the 5.0 lost.

What mods did it have?

I mean, were you constantly abusing your tranny? How many miles are on your car? My sister has 185,000 miles on her original auto tranny and it still works fine. That's incredible considering how snappy she drives. I have 76,000 miles on my 5spd tranny and it's perfectly fine. I don't think i've ever heard of a stock tranny/clutch really fail. Unless your doing pillow burnouts like Eric D. Wong I just don't know...

I have a V2 with a sotck 3.6 pulley. It's been in for almost a year. I just got off the phone with the dealer. It looks like the clutch is the only thing wrong at this point. Since they removed the tranny...they are looking in to why 5th gear got stuck.
They agreed to put in a ACT clutch just as long as I buy it and deliver it to them. The cheapest place I've found so far is $347.

As for racing, I went out to the track at least 4 times last year. And then there is your occasional run in with SHO's and Probes.

I bought a ACT kit for $320 from Stillen. I found a website out of NY that had them for $330. I told the guy on the phone and he beat their price.... not bad.
Still no word on the tranny.

Dave

You finally get the clutch in? I was planning to go the track soon, so maybe you can see what the potential is with your new ACT clutch.

It still at the dealership. The clutch gets delivered on Monday to them directly. Hopefully my car will be done Monday night. As for going to the track...I'm still waiting to hear the final word on the tranny. (If I damaged it or not)

my tranny is on its last legs. sounds like a baseball card in a bike wheel (like little kids used to do), doesnt like first or second gear if i'm rolling faster than 15, whines all the time...but i've been abusing it since 146k when i bought it, it now has 173k, so its served me well considering what i put it through.

sorry to hear that man....

just wondering....if dealer install the clutch and rebuild your tranny, will they honor the warranty if something happened? I am affraid they can blame the problems to the SC. just a thought.

Re: Re: tranny damage

They said they would still cover the tranny until the mileage is up on the warrenty but won't cover the clutch. I'm just happy that they are covering the tranny now with the SC in the car.

The dealership just called. The parts are still on back order, so they ordered a new tranny. The car will be ready on Firday.
