ACT Clutch odor?

I had my ACT Heavy Duty clutch installed about 3 months ago.

Got my S/C installed about 1 month ago.

Just started smellin' what seems to be clutch material - pretty nasty smell...

I'm not abusing the clutch - ie: no clutch drops, no burnouts and not riding the clutch...

Anyone have this kind of experience?

Could it be that the ACT cannot handle the load when I'm driving 80 mph and then drop it into 4th and punch it?

I'm puttin 265whp...

What stage is it? I had a stage II and never got a burning smell. It was an excellent clutch, and held all the power my boosted Max threw at it without a bit of trouble. I now have a SPEC stage I clutch in my Cobra, and have gotten a really nasty burning smell. I called SPEC and they told me it's normal and part of the break in, becuase the clutch is made up of a lot of metal/kevlar. The ACT stage II is organic if I remember correctly, but if you have another stage, and it's made more of metal/kevlar, then the burning smell is just the new clutch breaking in.

It's a stage 1 I believe... the Heavy Duty organic one...

I've got at least 2000 miles on it, so I wouldn't think that it's still in the break in phase..

It seems to hold ok though... matter of fact, when the boost kicks in hard in 1st gear, the wheels start to burn out...

ACT doesn't use stages. Is it the common NM1-HDMM package, which is their street clutch disc with heavy duty pressure plate?

If so, that is what i use and it holds 600hp+ and 600+tq just fine, even while on slicks (although its not fond of the big burnouts) Does it just smell, or is it slipping also - I would assume if it smells its slipping. You're sure it's clutch you smell? Try getting a second opinion if you are not sure

Does it do this immediately if the car has been sitting for a while? Or only when you have been driving for a bit? You may have the master cylinder rod checked out to make sure it is adjusted properly.

Good luck

I don't feel it slipping, it just started smelling out of the blue... The smell shows up after I've been driving it...

The clutch is hydralic, how can it be adjusted?

thanks for the info guys!

There is a rod going from the master cylinder through the firewall that connects to the back of the clutch pedal. It is threaded and can go in and out. I would not mess with it unless you truly know what you are doing with it though, or you will make more problems. If it is improperly adjusted, over time (driving, using the clutch pedal) it will build up pressure and cause the clutch to not fully engage, etc. I am not sure if that sounds like your problem

I agree with you. I have a ACT and I dont have not such smell or smoke coming out of my tranny. Need to fix that issue very fast before you end up purchasing another clutch kit.

I got the nasty smell a couple of times, but that was due to me easing the clutch out too slowly during a boosted 2-3 shift. Lots of slip at high rpm = lots of heat.

I dont shift slow, I shift very fast. The only time I got clutch smell is when I sat at the light and tried to do a burn out. That was driver error me.
