my fun turbo troubles....

I just have a turbo from an 85-86 300ZX and it went bad. It was leaking oil into my intake and there was a bit of shaft play. I took it off to replace it with another 300ZX turbo that I had bought and I found the turbo to be worse than I had though...

I have it all fixed now but I'm still trying to figure out how they broke in the first place. I want to say shaft play bit I don't think the shaft moved enough to do that kind of damage so something must have went through the turbo to do this damage and I don't know how that is possible since I've never ran it with the air filter off...

yeah, i'm planning on going to a t3/60-1 most likely but haven't really decided yet. i believe the a/r on the Z turbo is a whopping .46 or so on the turbine side. its terribly small for a 3 liter v6 but nissan didn't care about high output as much as they did low spooling for a better power band.

Dang! How did the bits of compressor impeller not damage your engine?

I'm not sure if they did damage or not. I haven't noticed any power decrease but I'll still have to somehow check to see if they scraped the cylinder walls at all. Hopefully they didn't but most likely they did do a little bit of damage.

wow. looks like mine.

Did you check the turboi before you installed it?

Is there any damage on the compressor side?

When I installed it, it looked perfectly fine. I didn't notice any cracks or anything.
