3" Exhaust options

I know a few of you booted folks have had 3" exhaust and have tried various mufflers.

I currently have a Magnaflow 3" and the drone is KILLING me. It's not like I don't expect a good amount of drone with a 3" exhaust, but this is insane.

What other options are there, and what is your experience with them?

Thanks!
IanS

I have an unknown muffler with drone. Stay AWAY from dynomax, from what I hear.

Is it striaght through? or do you have a resonanator. I don't have one

The B-Pipe is straight mandrel bent pipe with no resonator - The muffler also is straight through.

What about Borla or Flowmaster?

I have not heard anythign about them.

I would go to a muffler shop and see what they have to say.

If you can find a good one, they'll be able to tell you which one has the least amount of drone.

Why don't you add a couple of resonators to the B pipe, that will help remove the drone.

Flowmaster and Borla both make mufflers with 3" inlets. There are probably others as well.

Have any of you heard of RSR's mufflers? The have similar construction to the Apexi WS, which is really quiet. But this one has a 80mm inlet for you sc or tc guys. Looks pretty beefy, so it should keep the noise to a minimum.

http://www.hopupracing.com/rsexunmu60.html

"ExMag features - quietest exhaust note on the market (most applications) - refined stealth like appearance - ceramic coated mandrel bent piping - dyno proven gains in horsepower and torque - engineered in Japan - signature RS-R exhaust tip - constructed with 409 stainless steel for long life With the street performance enthusiast in mind, RS-R developed the ExMag exhaust line to provide powerful gains in horsepower and torque while retaining a quieter exhaust note. It is a well known fact that it is extremely difficult to produce an exhaust system that makes good power without the excessive noise. However, through extensive R&D at RS-R Headquarters in Japan, all ExMag systems have been dyno proven to provide significant power increases over similar exhaust systems. Our "Exhaust Magic" lineup offers an excellent alternative to the noisy "coffee can" style of exhausts. If you're tired of getting tickets and citations for excessive noise, this is the exhaust system you need. The classic styling and stealth like design will also help keep your car off the radar."

Holy crap! That's a lot of change! Either way, I think if you can find a 3" muffler that has a baffle in it and not straight through, that wil quiet it down some. Problem is, going quiet means loosing power....unless you have a money tree in you backyard! Resonators would help, but don't even some of the straight through designed ones still cause you to loose a little power? I still like your idea Ian of welding on a flange to the 3" piping to allow you to bolt on a quiet muffler. Then when you want power, you can just simply unbolt it, bolt on the magneflow and have a happy lead foot. You can get it down to a 15 minute deal.

S

Edit: I just notice the price is for the catback....maybe the muffler isn't so bad? Still though, it's probably $300 or so for a muffler.....

Yes it is! Compared to my magnaflow straight through it is very quiet. I'm sure Dyno Max's straight through mufflers are just as loud as the magnaflows, but the "Super Turbo's" are baffled and are great for daily driving.

Get the Dynomax Super Turbo!
