Which year max is best for turbo?

I looked through here for post similar and didn't see any. What year in your opinion is the best for Turbo. I have seen some posts saying the 95's are best to turbo because they are lighter, don't have an ecu problem and easier to modify. I would like to get a 97-98 maxima for turbo cuz they will have less miles, but if a 95 would be best i would just bite the bullet and build up the engine to handle it. help me please to come to an answer, i am so confused. thanks.

well, from one newb to another:

it's not the model year as a stock ecu is a stock ecu from 95-99. I don't think the JWT injector/maf programs are limited to certain model years like the timing advance programs are, though this is based entirely on what I've read lurking on this forum. The general health of your engine is what matters - a 95 engine with 150k in good health is a better than an abused 100k 99 engine.

Best just do a compression and vacuum gauge diagnostic check and if the #s are good then boost away. Haynes has a good writeup on how to do both tests and they are both very easy to do.

And as per usual read the stickies. They tell you a lot or point you to sites that do.

With a turbo, you don't need to over-rev the engine, which causes EXTREME stress on the internals, so any year is okay.

However, a higher rev-limit allows a bigger turbo and ultimately higher max power. I believe JWT can only program late '95s and '96s(check website/call), but you can swap one of those into a '97 with a CEL.

with the PFI turbo kit, if i just ran "safe boost" like 7psi, and had a maxima with almost a 100K miles would that blow the engine if i did the regular maintence stuff? cuz i plan on just boosting a lil and save up later for a engine build up.

I'd perform a compression test and if that looks good, I have no doubt the VQ can handle boost to 150K+ as long as you keep up the maintenance.

Many SR20DEs run boost with well over 100K miles.

I'm running 7 psi on my 104K Maxima. Motor is stock, and so is the tranny for the most part, neither has been rebuilt and the compression is still good. But do the compression test first before you go dropping a bunch of money on a turbo setup.
