3" Question
What part number Magnaflow do you have?
Are you sure yours is "straight through" and not dog-legged or some other version?
Your increased internal volume will help over the smaller round style, but that much?

when i looked into it before it was installed it looked perfectly straight through. here are the specs on it:
#14829
2.25" Inlet 4" Diam. Tip
Double Wall, Angle Cut
7" Length
14" Muffler Body Length

this is the 3 inch that i'm looking to get (looks just like the 14829 but its just 3 inches and a "race" series):
#14835
3" Inlet, 4" Diam. Tip
3" Internal Race Core
Double Wall, Angle Cut
7" Tip Length
14" Muffler Body Length

yeah, the turbo makes a huge difference in noise as well. i know of guys who are n/a who've complained of this muffler being loud but the turbo definitely makes it much more reasonable apparently.
i actually had this muffler when n/a and it was marginally louder but nothing that i complained about. i think possibly the biggest difference is the way people drive. it appears that most don't know when their peak efficiency occurs in the engine, which is the peak torque. with a low rpm peak torque like on the vg's you want to keep the revs around that rpm. ours is right under 3,000 rpm which is where i keep mine when at all possible. this lands me the best gas mileage that i've recorded. i bet everyone else keeps the rpms lower which at around 2,000 rpm causes a good amount of resonation/droning. since i'm never crusing at 2,000 rpm it has never bothered me and i've never even thought about it because of that.
ouch... now times to rest my hands and fingers due to all of that typing.
