EGT readings

Finally connected the EGT and was watching the gauge this morning.

I'm not so much concerned about the readings (I know temps will vary depending on proble placement) as I am with the fluctuation. I didn't realize the temp would jump around so much.

Crusing through town I was about 10k and then 12k on the interstate. Stopped at a light it held at 8k and then started falling. The needle moved in correlation to the throttle: more throttle = more heat almost instantaneously. Is this behavior typical? I didn't figure the EGT would respond so quickly. Also the needle fell when I turned off the car, but it didn't drop all the way down.

This is just running NA. Thanks.

10k degrees Fahrenheit or Celsius? Either way that's hot!!! Or did you mean 10 Kelvin? Brrr...that's cold.

My egt usually runs at 800 F at idle, about 1050 F cruising at 65. Give it gas and it goes up.

Oops my bad. didn't mean 10k. meant 1.0 to 1.2k Farenheit of course.

That's good, I was starting to worry I muffed the install. Thanks

what exactly do you gain from knowing your exhaust gas temperature? i never really was informed on this. i do know there used more in boosted cars then others but whats it do?

To know if your running rich or lean..

My car is running at about 500 at idle and never goes above 1100. cruizing at 65 its at a constant 800 degrees...So I pretty much know Im running really rich...Full Boost you should be at 1400 at the end of a quarter mile...anything lower your rich, higher lean..

I wouldn't necessarily use that 1400 deg. F as a rule of thumb though for these reasons:

- temp readings vary based on where you have the egt probe tapped at.
- They aren't necessarily calibrated very well - especially if you get an autometer one.
- an egt gauge won't help ya if you have a spike in a/f because it reacts too slow.

The right way to figure out if you are rich or lean by looking at an egt gauge is to do this: Get dyno tuned or even just dynoed, and observe you're a/f reading through the probe that the shop uses while dyno'ing and how it corresponds with your egt temps.

I have two questions. #1) What EGT would be normal for a SC'd motor? #2) Does any company make a dual gauge pod for an 01', because I ordered a Greddy boost and EGT gauge from Stillen, along with a dual pod, and it doesnt fit my car. The box says it fits 94-99's or something. I called Stillen and asked what the deal was and was told they dont make one for my year and that I could send it back before trying to modify it. Any suggestions.

I was just reading that detonation causes a DROP in EGT; and detonation is caused by, among other things, running lean.

The reason for the drop in temp is that detonation disrupts the insulating boundary layer of gases at the piston and cylinder wall surfaces, allowing heat to transfer from the exhaust gas into the piston and cylinder walls at a much higher rate.

In a situation like this, your EGT will rise with rpm until detonation occurs, then the EGT will suddenly drop a hundred degrees or so, depending on the severity of detonation.
