Exhaust clamps and gaskets

Just gathering the last few small items I need.

My exhaust is not flanged at certain points, looks like I need to use some sort of clamp. What is it called exactly that I need to connect two exhaust pipes together....is this what I need

http://www.prostreetonline.com/buy/d...xhaust_clamps/

or

http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...16&prmenbr=361

I also need to make a gasket for where my feed pipe bolts to the turbo. I have bought gasket material from Napa in the past for my PF TB but from what I remember what they had is not going to be good for this application. I would like to use a metal gakset. Is there sheets of metal gasket I can buy and cut to shape?

you can find the metal gasket for whatever flange you have on e-ay or at a local performance shop.

I am not very familiar with v-bands, Although I have for my turbo and I kinds see how that works by looking at it but on that the flange had to be welded on. So would I need to weld on this flange to connect exhuast piping? It does not seem like the clamp would be wide enough to hold two pipes together.

If you could give a description of how this would work on exhaust pipes I wold appreciate it.

I need two of them as well....man, I am spending well over $150 alone on couplers and t-bolts

This flange would get welded to your exhuast pipe, another one just like it gets welded to the other exhuast pipe.

then this clamp connects the two

this is what you would get when you order it two flanges and one clamp to connect them. But you do have to weld the flages to the pipes.

I HOPE THAT HELPS

If one of the ends of the pipe is flared so that the other connecting side can slide into it - then you can just get that jeg's clamp and use that. The PFI kit comes with similar clamps for the feed pipe as well as exhaust piping

your right, the pipes are like that. I don't actually have my exhaust yet but after you said that I looked at the pics I had and that is how it seems to be designed.

Thanks

v-bands are a type of flange.. they can be all over your exhaust.. kev had them where his cat was for those "screw the air moments"

I've always wondered why turbo people are so biased toward clamping the piping rather than just welding. Someone please enlighten me.

I am just gonna guess here....I think in this case it has to do with the piping being custom and things not fitting together exactly. I think welding on flanges would require the fitment to be more exact as opposed to having them clamp...more room for error I think

For removal - if the downpipe to the muffler was all one piece, it would be near impossible to remove. V-Band makes it EASY! Also, another benefit vband has over a 2bolt flange etc, is you can turn the pipe to different angles and then clamp it. After using them, I don't understand why any other clamps are still in existence.

I figured it had to do with making the fabing and removal easier. I still don't quite get it. Why not have a regular bolting type connection wherever required?

have a shop weld a flange on each side and just bolt them up with a gasket in between - they shouldnt charge you more than a couple of bucks to do it. probably around $20-30 for the flanges and bolts, and $10-20 for the welding (unless you can weld yourself) - much cheaper than v-band... but, if you are rich then v-band is the sh*t
