More specifically, I can use a -4AN to 1/4 barbed nipple or a -6AN to 3/8 barbed nipple

Well, I got the 6AN to 3/8 nipple and I don't think that is going to work and the 1/4 is too small. Can't find a 6AN to 5/16 nipple. Maybe I will have to do a 6AN to X pipe thread to 5/16 nipple. Just wasted like $15 on fittings
